Job Introduction
We are looking for a Producer who shares our love of radio to work on BBC Radio 1Xtra. If you love black music, youth culture and radio - then we are interested in hearing from you.
This is a production position working for BBC Audio. BBC Audio devises, develops and delivers original content for the BBC. We produce podcasts, radio and music programs, deliver live events, provide creative services and forge partnerships. We are the key suppliers of daytime and evening programmes across 1Xtra. Our portfolio includes 1Xtra Breakfast with Nadia Jae, Ace, Remi Burgz, Kaylee Golding, DJ Target, Sian Anderson, Jeremiah Asiamah, Sir Spyro, Nick Bright, Joelah Noble, Rampage, David Rodigan, Trevor Nelson and Snoochie Shy.
This role will be leading on content delivery for 1Xtra; a dynamic station for young audiences that champions the best in new black music, from brand new artists to established names. Our presenters and contributors are the voice of the Black British experience. 1Xtra is more than a radio station; producing special content for social accounts, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds as well as major live music events and community outreach sessions.
We are looking for a producer who will be based in Birmingham. The successful candidate will be passionate and knowledgeable about Birmingham and the West Midlands and will be excited to bring the culture of the West Midlands to 1Xtra listeners.
Working closely together with Radio 1 and Asian Network, these stations look to connect the BBC with the next generation of young audiences and be the leading voice in young UK culture.
The successful candidate will be working predominantly on 1Xtra programmes, but may also be required to work across the wider production unit.
Main Responsibilities
* To be responsible for the development, planning and production of content on radio and a variety of digital platforms
* To make sound editorial decisions and offer advice, support and guidance to your production team
* To interpret and deliver on creative briefs set by Senior Staff or Commissioners
* To effectively manage on-air presenting talent and talent relationships
* To be responsible for live broadcasts, events and outside broadcasts
* To use a variety of other specialist production skills in a multi-skilled environment
* To be a creative self-starter with initiative, tenacity and the ability to see how your work fits in with the wider needs of the department
* To ensure all content produced by your whole team is of a first-class standard
* To ensure that output produced by your whole team complies with BBC editorial, legal, technical, design and accessibility standards
* To work effectively with other departments, suppliers and partners (internal and external)
* To direct and coordinate resources in a busy production environment
* To nurture and develop members of your production team

* Is passionate and knowledgeable about black music and culture
* Is experienced in leading a team to make first-class content in a broadcast or content production environment
* Is technically proficient in live studio broadcasting and production in a self-operating radio studio
* Is experienced in directing on-air radio presenters in a live environment
* Is able to understand the creative ambitions of the 1Xtra network and lead a team to deliver the best content for the 1Xtra audience
* Is able to generate creative ideas and develop fresh new approaches that will engage young diverse audiences
* Has effective planning and organising skills
* Is a strong communicator with the ability to influence decision-making at all levels
* Can manage positive working relationships with staff, contributors and talent
* Is familiar with research techniques and has experience of writing clear and concise material
* Has the ability to use IT proficiently, including a range of software packages
* Has working knowledge of a variety of social media and digital platforms
* Has sound editorial judgment and understands the importance of the BBC’s editorial guidelines
