Our team
The Council’s Planning Services play a fundamental role in managing the natural and built environment. The Environment & Design workstream comprises a multidisciplinary team of specialists who support the council's role in place-shaping by working across the whole planning function.
Role summary
The role of Principal Landscape Architect will promote the creation, protection, and enhancement of the landscape of North Yorkshire. You will provide specialist landscape architecture advice to ensure statutory requirements and council objectives are met.
Duties and responsibilities:
* Supporting the preparation, implementation, and review of the statutory development plan, particularly in relation to landscape and Green Infrastructure policies.
* Preparing landscape and green infrastructure guidance.
* Providing advice on landscape mitigation and habitat creation and restoration.
* Providing landscape advice on conservation issues for historic parks and gardens.
* Working proactively with the National Landscapes to conserve and enhance the natural beauty.
* Preparing and presenting landscape evidence at public examinations and local inquiries.
* Responding to pre-application enquiries, planning applications and enforcement cases.
* Undertaking consultations, site visits and meetings with clients and council representatives.
* Providing landscape input to design/development briefs.
* Advising on landscape schemes associated with new development.
* Providing landscape-related training and briefings.
* Providing landscape advice and support to other groups and organizations.
Experience / Qualifications:
* Degree and relevant professional qualification in landscape design and management or similar.
* Evidence of continuous professional and personal development.
* Significant post-qualification experience in landscape design/architecture.
* Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of landscape.
* Good understanding of Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment.
* A good working knowledge of the town and country planning system.
* Experience of negotiating with a range of bodies and individuals.
* Effective communication using a variety of methods tailored to a broad range of stakeholders.
* Working across organisational boundaries to develop effective relationships.
