The post
The Virtual Immersive Training and Learning (VITAL) research group at the University of Exeter wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the delivery of a project funded by their research partners Smiths Detection (https://www.smithsdetection.com/), a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies. The project is being managed by Professors Sam Vine and Mark Wilson. The post will involve managing and conducting experimental and large data set psychological research into the efficacy of a new virtual training platform. This post is available from September 2025 until June 2028 and will involve leading on many aspects of the research project; including reading published literature to define clear research questions, working alongside colleagues to obtain ethical approval for the work, before then collecting and analysing data for communication back to stakeholders and writing up research outputs for publication. The role will also include the mentoring of two PhD students who will support the project delivery; the management of relations with our research partners at Smiths; and assistance in the management of the research facilities relevant to the project.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or possess an equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to manage large experiments and data sets. Applicants will have experience of managing research projects involving psychological interventions with human participants. They will be able to measure and analyse psycho-physiological responses that may include brain imaging, eye movements, cardiovascular responses, etc. As there will be lots of data produced in both experimental and real-world data sets, advanced data modelling experience would be desirable.
