Job Purpose
To lead, develop and co-ordinate a substantial national/international clinical research group of strategic importance to the Immunology area within the School of Infection and Immunity. To take a leading role in management activities and the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. To contribute to the clinical Paediatric Rheumatology service commensurate with above and leading service developments in this area, under an NHS honorary contract at consultant level.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
UofG Academic Activities
1. Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy.
2. Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.
3. Take a lead in major funding bids and related activities, including knowledge exchange, which develop and sustain support for the subject area and recognised excellence for the University.
4. Undertake academic management and leadership roles and responsibilities to ensure high quality course/programme administration, setting and monitoring standards and lead on the development of policy and practice across research and teaching teams beyond School level.
5. Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.
6. Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online provision.
7. Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.
8. Regularly attend and participate in appropriate activities to effectively contribute to the subject specialism, through learned societies, professional bodies, broader review and editorial processes. Disseminate research findings locally, nationally and internationally to enhance learning within the discipline and to represent the University externally.
9. Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.
10. Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.
11. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
12. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
13. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

* Devise novel projects and lead junior staff in the supervision of undergraduate students.

B. Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
The appointee will form part of the NHSGGC Paediatric Rheumatology service and will be responsible (on a pro rata basis) with the other staff for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective service. The Paediatric Rheumatology service is based at the new Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. The children’s hospital features 244 paediatric beds with a further 12 neonatal beds in the maternity unit next door. The paediatric rheumatology service in Glasgow sees over 450 new patient referrals per annum. Local referrals come mainly from Glasgow and the West of Scotland but at times from as far afield as the Western Isles.
There are two dedicated general paediatric rheumatology clinics per week. One clinic accepts primary school age and younger children. This is a multi-specialist one-stop clinic with ophthalmology providing screening and uveitis assessment as part of the same appointment for JIA children. The second is for teenagers. All three Glasgow consultants currently attend these clinics along with CNS and physiotherapists, a dedicated consultant ophthalmologist and optometry team. OT attends as required. The clinics support up to 2 trainees plus visiting trainees and undergraduates. Patients have immediate access to musculoskeletal ultrasound, entonox joint injections and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) within the clinics.
There are monthly connective tissue disease clinics also supporting vasculitis and autoinflammatory conditions. There are also monthly multidisciplinary “non-inflammatory” clinics, a biannual genetics clinics with a dedicated geneticist, a combined clinic with orthopaedic colleagues 1-2 times per year for patients with refractory wrist arthritis and combined clinics with Dermatology throughout the year.
Glasgow Paediatric Rheumatology has an excellent dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising 3 nurse specialists, dedicated physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The therapy hub contains all key AHP specialities including the physiotherapy department with its own hydrotherapy pool, podiatry, orthotics, psychology and liaison psychiatry and a dedicated children’s pain team, speech and language, audiology and hospital school. Care of non-organic pain is shared with other services within the Children’s Hospital.
An honorary consultant contract will be issued by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. The job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director pending the research commitment to be established as per above. The precise allocation of time and associated objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning. This will apply to NHS sessions only. For example, if 40% of the appointees job plan were allocated to NHS sessions this could include 1-1.5 clinics per week (annualised), MDT meetings, 5-10 “hotweeks” per year and could also include an opportunity to support another service working within the Scottish Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology Network (SPARN) if desired.
The appointee will:
* Provide liaison in a timely manner with clinicians, hospital staff, and other colleagues as required concerning the management of patients.
* Take an appropriate share of responsibility for departmental commitments.
* Have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, and for the proper functioning of his/her Department.
* Undertake any administrative duties identified in the Job Plan.
* All consultants will be expected to contribute to the following:
o Involvement in policy and SOP preparation.
o Business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods, and forward planning for staff and equipment requirements.
o Professional responsibilities.
* The appointee will be expected to agree a personal development plan. The appointee will require to be registered for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with a relevant Royal College, and to fulfil requirements for annual certification and for appropriate revalidation. Arrangements for annual and study leave are as designated in the Terms and Conditions of Service.
* Appraisal and revalidation
* The appointee will ensure their appraisal is carried out annually. This will be arranged and administered through the Scottish On-line Appraisal Resource (SOAR). Revalidation will also be facilitated via this route.
* The appointee will be expected to take part in the out of hours telephone advice service for Paediatric Rheumatology covering the whole of Scotland which attracts between 1-3% salary uplift and would likely entail providing telephone availability for approximately 1 in 6 weekends as well as weekdays during an allocated “hotweek” on service.
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
* A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD or MD] or equivalent in related discipline with an extensive and established reputation in research and significant teaching experience within the discipline/subject area.
* A2. Requisite clinical qualification and certification for clinical practice at Consultant level in the UK.
* A3. Relevant and enduring membership of General Medical Council.
* A4. Hold MRCPCH or equivalent.
* A5. CCT in Paediatrics or Paediatric Rheumatology.
* A6. Completed a higher specialist-training programme (at least 2 years) in paediatric rheumatology OR equivalent training and experience.
* A7. Child protection training (Level 3).
Desirable
* B1. Where appropriate a post graduate certificate in academic practice and teaching.
* B2. Proven University teaching ability, including assessment and interest in curriculum development.
* B3. A thorough understanding of, and track record in, contributing to broader academic leadership and management at School/Service/College level.

Terms and Conditions
An honorary consultant contract will be applied for from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, with an associated salary from £96,963 – £128,841 per annum on the New Consultant Contract (NCC) Scotland. Further payments may be made by the NHS for clinical activity e.g. a clinical EPA, Discretionary Points, Merit Award and/or Availability Supplement, if eligible.
