Description Construction Engineer, Erection All Risks Office or Home based (flexible hybrid model) This is an exciting opportunity to work within our growing Technical Lines Engineering team, supporting our underwriters develop Chubb’s Erection All Risks construction portfolio, interacting with our clients and brokers in providing risk engineering input from early construction through to operational handover of insured plants. We are looking for an experienced construction risk engineer with prior experience in Construction / Erection in high hazard sectors. Prior engagement in power generation facilities including alternative / renewable energy plants would be a bonus. The successful applicant will work closely with our underwriting and claims teams, providing professional engineering advice with the aim of improving underwriting profitability and assisting in portfolio development and new business opportunities. The role will support business written within the UK, Ireland and South Africa regions (UKISA). The role is UK based (flexible on location) and requires travel to client sites throughout the UK and Ireland plus occasional overseas engagements. Periodically, travel will be required to our London and Glasgow offices for meetings and team engagement. The role will report to the Technical Lines Engineering Manager for UKISA Role Purpose: Provide timely, succinct and technical engineering support with a focus towards property based risk engineering and in particular Fire Engineering evaluation of Construction/Erection projects. This will include, but not be limited to, Power, Renewable and Alternative Energy Plants and some Heavy Industrial Facilities to ensure compliance with CHUBB Technical Lines Engineering Strategy. The role will include liaison with a wider range of customer groups including underwriters and importantly clients and their insurance brokers, managing the EAR Engineering input from early concept of new facilities through design, construction to operational handover. Key Responsibilities: Provide risk management advice, using effective and objective communication to both internal and external customer groups. Develop and implement tools based on knowledge, efficiency, and cost effectiveness for delivering best possible solutions for control and reduction of financial risk to Chubb and clients. Develop and maintain continuous professional engineering knowledge and resource within the areas of expertise. Analyse claims in the region to draw conclusions and feed the lessons learned back into the underwriting process. Develop and improve communication effectiveness and manage relationships to maintain CHUBB’s credibility as the leading professional and ethical insurer to clients, brokers, and the insurance market. Develop and prioritise objectives for delivering risk management programmes in association with underwriters and the insureds’ management and brokers. Develop a continuous improvement philosophy in respect of the team and workflow management. Develop and broaden knowledge outside of core expertise enabling and assisting the underwriting and claims functions through education and training. Qualifications Knowledge and experience in property biased risk based hazards associated with Power Generation related Construction / Erection projects (and operating Power plants) including Biomass, Energy from Waste facilities, gas and steam turbine generators, hydro turbines and internal combustion engines. This would further include some other heavy industrial plant and machinery within other non -power industries. Hands-on experience gained primarily in the Power Generation industry or associated Insurance industry with progressive responsibility. Hold relevant professional qualifications in Fire Engineering, Risk Management, Process Safety etc. Experience of implementation of property protection based fire engineering solutions including passive fire protections and active fire systems deployed to meet international standards such as NFPA 850: Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Electric Generating Plants (or equivalent). Insurance engineering experience gained with a recognised lead insurer or reinsurer would be preferred but not essential. Excellent communication and negotiating skills with ability to work both on own initiative and as an effective team member.
