This post is based at University Hospital in Coventry (UHCW) within the Department of Clinical Haematology.
The post holder will work alongside two core medical trainees and one GP trainee/ FY2 on the haematology ward.
The post holder will have access to the general training opportunities appropriate to their level of training (weekly half-day sessions), in addition to haematology-specific teaching and some oncology teaching.
The postholder will receive training in management of haematology inpatients, including acute emergencies, complications of chemotherapy and management of non-malignant haematology patients. They will be supervised by consultants and specialty trainees (STs) in haematology. There will also be opportunities for training in procedures such as bone marrow aspirates and trephines, and tunnelled line removal.

The post holder will work on the haematology ward and provide some cover to the haematology day unit.
• Daily ward rounds with attending Consultant Haematologist and specialist trainees (STs), providing continuity of care for inpatients.
• Outliers / Day Unit. Provide support to the ST holding duty bleep. Review of acutely unwell patients on the haematology day unit (supported by ST and consultant). Dependent on expertise, assist in procedures on the day unit (cannulation, venesection)
• In these roles the post holder will work under the supervision of the Consultant Haematologists and STs to:
• • Keep patient lists updated
• Request blood and radiology tests
• Request and prescribe blood products
• Review and discuss acutely unwell patients on the ward
• Clerk elective admissions and prescribe usual medication and appropriate prophylactic medication
• Plan safe discharges with robust handover to the day unit or base trust (South Warwickshire Foundation Trust (SWFT) or George Eliot Hospital (GEH))
• Perform procedures such as cannulation, venesection (and, after training, marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, Hickman line removal).
• Contribute to the management of patients in the Day Unit in collaboration with our Associate Specialist and Speciality Doctor.
• Attend network Multidisciplinary Team Meetings in haematology and present patients at those meetings. There is also opportunity to attend MDT meetings in Thrombosis, Haemophilia and Haemoglobinopathy.
