JOB ROLE: Engineering Manager
JOB LOCATION: Shepley, West Yorkshire
REPORTING TO: Factory Manager
Shepley Spring are the UK’s leading bottled water manufacturer with over 20 years’ experience in production and are proud to remain a family run business to this day.
The company operates in three manufacturing facilities in West Yorkshire and owns several high-speed production lines with the capabilities of producing both still and sparkling water servicing leading retailers such as Morrisons, Lidl, Booker Tesco and Sainsbury through private label and produces the brands Ice Valley and White Rock exclusively.
COMPETENCIES & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team Leadership and Management:
* Lead and mentor a team of 6 multi-skilled engineers, encouraging a collaborative, high-performance culture.
* Provide technical guidance and support, ensuring the team has the necessary tools and resources for success.
* Manage team performance, conduct regular appraisals, and implement development plans to improve individual and team capabilities.
* Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
Maintenance and Equipment Reliability:
* Oversee the maintenance and reliability of all plant equipment, ensuring the highest levels of uptime and efficiency.
* Develop and implement preventative maintenance (PM) strategies to minimize unscheduled downtime and reduce production losses.
* Manage breakdown response, troubleshooting, and fault resolution, ensuring minimal disruption to production.
* Collaborate with production teams to optimize equipment operation and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
Project Management:
* Lead and manage engineering projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget.
* Plan and coordinate equipment installations, upgrades, and modifications in line with production requirements.
* Work with cross-functional teams to design and implement solutions for process improvement, cost savings, and quality enhancement.
Health, Safety, and Compliance:
* Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
* Identify and mitigate risks related to plant operations and maintenance.
* Lead safety initiatives, including safety audits, training programs, and accident investigations.
* Ensure that engineering activities meet company standards for quality control and compliance.
Budget and Resource Management:
* Manage the engineering department’s budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources for maintenance and project work.
* Identify cost-saving opportunities in maintenance processes, equipment procurement, and operational efficiency.
* Implement lean manufacturing principles, root cause analysis, and Six Sigma methodologies to drive continuous improvement across engineering operations.
* Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for equipment performance, maintenance, and team efficiency.
* Lead initiatives to optimize production workflows, reduce downtime, and improve overall plant performance.
* Implement lean manufacturing principles, root cause analysis, and Six Sigma methodologies to drive continuous improvement across engineering operations.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:
* HNC/HND in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree or apprenticeship equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
* Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering management, preferably in the beverage manufacturing or food & beverage industry.
* Proven experience managing a multi-skilled engineering team in a fast-paced production environment.
* Strong background in plant maintenance, equipment reliability, and troubleshooting in a manufacturing setting.
* Experience with project management, including budgeting, resource allocation, and scheduling.
* Strong leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and develop a diverse engineering team.
* In-depth knowledge of engineering systems, equipment, and manufacturing processes specific to beverage production.
* Experience in preventative maintenance, condition monitoring, and root cause analysis.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to manage complex technical issues under pressure.
* Strong project management abilities, with a focus on on-time, on-budget delivery.
* Familiarity with regulatory compliance standards in food and beverage production (e.g., FDA, HACCP, etc.).
* Proficient in the use of CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System) and other relevant engineering software tools.
