Cervical Screening Quality Improvement Nurse
Each month around 100 cervical screening samples are rejected due to avoidable errors, which include out of date equipment, patient identification errors, unlabelled samples, and samples taken out of programme. This has wide-ranging impacts on the national cervical screening programme, the patient, who has to return for repeat screening, the practice, laboratory, and wider screening and immunisation team and locality stakeholders.
The Cervical Screening Quality Improvement role will play a key part in ensuring the numbers of rejected cervical screening samples are reduced to a never event within Greater Manchester (GM) localities, ensuring a high-quality service for patients within primary care. Furthermore, ensuring the GM escalation process is progressed with registered sample takers to enable a standardised approach in supporting registered cervical screening sample takers in practice. Identifying any areas of practice which may require further support, such as access to IT systems, processes in place, and adequate appointment times. Ensuring registered cervical screening sample takers are confident and competent in their ability to perform cervical sample taking with processes in place to ensure samples received at the processing laboratory are processed.
Main duties of the job
Working as part of a pilot for 12 months on a sessional weekly basis, the Cervical Screening Quality Improvement Nurse will review monthly rejected sample data for their locality shared by the G.M. Screening and Immunisation Team and processing laboratory. Using a quality improvement methodology, the post holder will progress the GM escalation policy within their locality to support quality improvements within cervical screening.
As an experienced cervical sample taker and mentor with a special interest and passion for the role, you will be responsible for evaluating the quality improvement outcomes across cervical screening in your locality. This will involve monitoring, data analysis, and report writing.
Over the course of the 12-month pilot, there is an expectation that there will be a sustainable reduction in the frequency of rejected samples within localities, leading to an overall quality improvement in cervical screening in primary care.
There will be two Cervical Screening Quality Improvement Nurse roles available to cover the whole GM locality at 2 days per week each (0.4 WTE).
