NHS HIGHLAND
EMERGENCY PRACTITIONER (GP)
Permanent, Part time posts minimum 21 hours per week
This is an excellent opportunity to work in the capital of the Highlands with a great team and live in an area of outstanding natural beauty with unparalleled opportunities for outdoor pursuits and an excellent quality of life.
The Emergency Practitioner role is a unique and well established hybrid role which will make use of your primary and emergency care training to deliver quality care to patients, within a fully consultant supported modern Emergency Department. Raigmore Hospital in Inverness is the principal Emergency Department in the Highlands providing services to Inverness and the wider Highland region, including being the regional trauma unit covering over 10,000 square miles and a population of 320,000. We have a diverse and stimulating case mix across all ages and presentations, with over 40,000 attendances per annum.
Co-located beside the Emergency Department is the Primary Care Emergency Centre, where Emergency Practitioners have held a unifying role providing emergency care for both Emergency Department and Out of Hours Primary Care. Increasingly the Emergency Practitioner’s role is more focused within the Emergency Department; nevertheless, along with sessional GPs and nurse practitioners, you may still have some involvement in out of hours’ primary care provision.
Post holders must hold the Certificate of Completion of Training for General Practitioners and be eligible for inclusion on the General Practice Primary Care performers list. Applicants can apply if within 6 months of completion of training. Prior experience in emergency medicine is expected with experience in resuscitation courses desirable. However, additional training will be provided.
The core rota involves dayshifts, backshifts and nightshifts with weekend working. The out of hours working commitment is recognized within the generous remuneration. Further, the rota allows for flexibility in working patterns and as such post holders can and do combine this post with other roles. This is an exciting opportunity, providing broad clinical exposure to the full range of emergency care within a welcoming team, in a modern environment with full support facilities and excellent continuing professional development opportunities.
The department is supported by 8.6 WTE Consultants, up to 154 EPs, 4 Specialty Doctors, 7 GPST’s, an ACCS Trainee, clinical fellows, as well as emergency nurse practitioners. We have recently expanded our trainee rota tier to improve our staffing profile. All EPs have access to personal and departmental development time.
