This role reports to the Head of Learning Strategies (SENCo).
Hours of Work
Hours will be discussed at interview.
The role will run from mid-August to mid-June in order to support pupils in advance of their arrival in September.
The amount of holiday will be in line with that of teachers.
Key Responsibilities
To carry out the duties of an EAL Lead as circumstances may require and in accordance with the school's policies under the direction of the Head of Learning Strategies (SENCo) and Deputy Head, Learning and Teaching.
To be considered for this role candidates must have proven experience working with EAL pupils. The candidate can have Qualified Teacher Status, but it is not a requirement.
Teaching and Learning
* Monitoring and enhancing the quality first teaching of EAL pupils.
* Assist in the educational and social development of pupils.
* Endeavour to give every child the opportunity to reach their potential and meet high expectations.
* Assess and identify the language proficiency levels.
* Develop, implement, and monitor individual language acquisition plans for EAL pupils.
* Deliver intervention booster lessons or lead phonics groups when required.
* Manage data and analyse it to track progress, responding as appropriate and evaluating the impact of interventions.
* Support classroom teachers in integrating EAL-friendly teaching methods and resources.
* Act as a liaison between the school and parents of EAL pupils, ensuring effective communication and building positive relationships.
* Provide guidance to parents on supporting their child's language development at home.
* Maintain accurate records of EAL pupils, including their progress and any interventions.
* Report on EAL pupils' performance and outcomes to Head of Learning Strategies and SLT where appropriate.
* Share the responsibility for pastoral care of the children.
* Ensure working practices are appropriate to meet ISI standards and requirements.
* Stay updated on best practices in EAL education.
* Provide staff training or CPD sessions.
Other Requirements
* Contribute to the operation of the school through effective participation in meetings and management systems necessary to coordinate the management of the school.
* Take part in marketing and liaison activities such as Open Evenings, Parents Evenings, Review days and events with partner schools.
* Support the Learning Strategies Department and work with pupils with Special Educational Needs as requested and deployed.
* Take responsibility for own professional development and duties in relation to school policies and practices.
* Assist with the organisation of school trips and attend trips where required.
* Engage in the School performance and development system.
* Liaise effectively with parents and governors.
* Attend any required out of working hours activities e.g. training, staff meetings, parent evenings.
* Undertake After School Care duties or clubs as required.
* Undertake any duties or tasks as reasonably requested by the Head of Learning Strategies, Deputy Head, and the Head of Holmewood House.
Person Specification
* Strong understanding of the challenges faced by EAL pupils, including cultural and linguistic barriers.
* Expertise in EAL-specific teaching strategies, such as scaffolding, modelling, and differentiation.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with pupils, staff, and parents from diverse backgrounds.
* Proficiency in using data to track progress and evaluate the impact of EAL interventions.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidance.
* Teamwork skills to work effectively as part of a large team.
* Keenness to reflect on advice and suggestions made by colleagues and ensure sharing and effective usage of resources to the benefit of the school, department, and pupils.
* Ability to work under the direction of colleagues, as required across the school.
* Pro-active and able to develop and use own initiative where required.
* Positive and professional communication skills with both staff and pupils.
