Job Description
Company Description
The Yorkshire Society is a not-for-profit organisation that celebrates and promotes Yorkshire's economy, history, heritage, beauty, and culture. Established in 1980, it serves as the champion of 'God's own country' locally, nationally, and internationally, with affiliated organizations worldwide. Re-structured and reorganised in 2018, the society now brings people together, raises funds to support initiatives and communities, and operates as a Private Limited Company providing membership benefits to individuals and organisations.
The Society ‘brings the people of Yorkshire together’ for business and pleasure, and it ‘celebrates and promotes’ everything that makes Yorkshire special.
The Yorkshire Society is a membership organisation, providing those who want to show their Yorkshire credentials a way to do so, whilst also providing members with benefits that justify the fee.
The Society has not actively promoted itself or membership, relying instead on those who come across the Society to join if they wish to do so. This means that Yorkshire’s population of 5.5m people, and c400k enterprises, is largely unaware of the Society or the benefits of joining it.
The Society is open to anyone and, in essence, provides ordinary people with the opportunity to do extra-ordinary things under the guise of the Society by collaborating with each other or with other organisations. As such, members (individual and corporate) have the Society at their disposal.
As an organisation, The Yorkshire Society seeks to be useful or helpful to members and Yorkshire as a whole.
Role Description
This is a full-time - at home and on-site across Yorkshire - paid role as a Membership Development Manager focussing efforts on businesses and organisations in Yorkshire. The Membership Development Manager will be responsible for day-to-day tasks related to membership development i.e. the recruitment of new members and the Society's relationship with its membership, revenue growth, communications, customer service and sales related to members and membership.
The person we envisage for this role will, as we do, love Yorkshire. They will be able to work alone and as a team, contributing to the overall management of the Society when necessary – as the importance of the role clearly requires. They will not be a clock-watcher, but someone focussed on agreed goals and dedicated to achieving them, whatever time it takes, happy to be ultimately judged and rewarded on results. They will enjoy meeting people, be a good listener and have an eye for opportunities, which they will also be adept at creating.
To fulfil this role to its full potential the candidate will require their own transport as it is expected to require visits to prospective members and locations of events by the Society and others.
