Job description
Our client, a leading Defence & Security company, is seeking a Safety Management System Manager to join their team on a permanent basis. Based in Bristol, you will play a crucial role in delivering the Organisational Safety Management System in accordance with company policy and process.
Key Accountabilities
1. Maintaining Organisational SMS documentation and ensuring that everyone understands safety policies, processes, and procedures
2. Challenging, inspiring, mentoring, and encouraging positive employee attitudes, behaviours, and actions towards safety
3. Coaching and training staff in the use of Safety Management tools and methodologies as described in the SMS manual
4. Collecting, evaluating, processing, analysing, and storing safety information from within the organization as well as the wider Defence industry
5. Ensuring that proper safety training is provided so that risk assessment processes are ingrained within the organization and that safety discussions are facilitated throughout the organization
6. Fostering a positive safety culture throughout the organization; this includes promoting an open reporting culture and ensuring that punitive actions are not taken against individuals making voluntary or mandatory safety reports
7. Monitoring how the Just Culture policy is applied, and reporting to the Accountable Executive when issues are identified
8. Ensuring that the reporting system is effective and that occurrences have been timely and properly analysed; in particular, ensuring that identified root cause(s) of incidents, accidents, and failures within the system are relevant and mitigated accordingly to prevent recurrence
9. Ensuring that corrective and preventive actions are managed and implemented by the relevant departments; are performing as intended; and are reported to the safety committee (or other functional body)
10. Ensuring that the organization has policies, procedures, and plans for responding to emergency situations (i.e., overseeing emergency response for the organization)
11. Ensuring safety issues are properly coordinated, communicated, and addressed between internal and external bodies
12. Considering internal or external factors that may result in emerging risks or require existing risk assessments to be reviewed
13. Manage compliance at the company level against relevant statutory and regulatory organisational safety requirements
Requirements:
14. Expert knowledge of Safety Management Systems
15. Formal SMS training from a credible provider
16. Significant experience in delivering an SMS in a regulated industry
17. Previous experience of compliance management
18. Minimum SC security clearance required
