Locum Consultant in Geriatric & General Medicine

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our Geriatric Medicine team based at Epsom Hospital. The successful applicant will play an important role in the assessment, treatment, and management of older people, in addition to contributing to the overall proactive and preventative agenda. You will work within our forward-thinking and expert multidisciplinary team to provide excellent care.
You will be expected to bring dynamism and enthusiasm to further develop a service fit for the future needs of our local population while ensuring that current service provision continues to be high-value and delivered to the highest standard. Frequent review of the service is anticipated to ensure that Trust and departmental strategic priorities are being met.
You will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education. The development of relevant research interests is encouraged, and opportunities will be enhanced alongside areas of specialist interest.
Main duties of the job
1. Be responsible for the clinical management of in and outpatients under your care.
2. Show dynamism, enthusiasm, and flexibility in participating in the provision and reshaping of services for the older person and developing integrated ways of working with the community frailty teams.
3. Provide a first-class clinical service to all older people.
4. Provide education, senior guidance, and input to help resident doctors make clinical decisions and develop their clinical knowledge and fulfill training needs.
5. Lead and support the multi-disciplinary team with complex discharge planning.
6. Facilitate the safe and timely discharge of patients, using community support services where appropriate.
7. Actively participate and be engaged in daily multi-disciplinary team meetings.
8. Participate in the development and implementation of care pathways for older patients presenting or referred to the acute hospital.
9. Work within the framework of applicable Trust policies, procedures, and clinical governance.
10. Comply with the GMC's 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time.
11. Be responsible and accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.

Job responsibilities
The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to patients.
* Comply with the GMC's guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time.
* Ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
* Undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in agreement with your Clinical Director.
* Be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Clinical Director.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
* Hold a medical qualification.
* Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCP or equivalent.
* Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC for GIM and Geriatric Medicine or be within six months of obtaining CCT.
* MD, PhD, or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.
Teaching & Research Experience
* Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
* Ability to teach clinical skills.
* Ability to contribute to change management.
* Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems.
* Experience of supervising resident doctors.
* Experience of teaching lay groups and other staff groups.
* Ability to supervise postgraduate research.
Clinical, Management & Administrative Experience
* High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty.
* Audit & Research experience.
* Attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CESR.
* Supervision of post-graduate trainees.
* Clinical governance.
* Ability to organise inpatient and outpatient waiting lists.
* Experience of service development.
Language
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements.
