Job summary
This is a NHS locum full-time post for 1 year to strengthen the existing complement of full time Consultants Physicians in Respiratory Medicine. The successful candidate will work as part of a busy, dynamic chest team.
The post will involve a commitment to respiratory inpatient care, bronchoscopic and pleural lists and respiratory outpatient care with an opportunity to develop a sub-speciality interest in one of sleep medicine, Interstitial Lung disease or community respiratory care.
Main duties of the job
Sessions will be provided for patient-related administration and supporting patient activities. Successful applicants will be encouraged to develop a sub-speciality interest that complements the existing team.
Currently the Respiratory Physicians participate in a respiratory on call rota (currently 1:9 weekdays and 1:10 weekends). Upon appointment of a new colleague via this post the rota would become 1:10weekdays and 1:11 weekends.

Job responsibilities
The contract assumes sessions of professional activity amounting to PAs allocated as direct patient care and 2 PAs to supporting professional activities. This would include teaching and training of junior doctors, CPD, audit and governance. There are regular good practice meeting replacing routine clinical work which has been factored into the allowance. In practice this amounts to PA a week and the expectation, therefore, is that the routine week will consist of 8 PAs allocated to direct patient care and PA for supporting professional activity.
On call duties involve daytime ward rounds of the respiratory ward. Consultants are expected to take phone calls during the day and evenings, which would attract a 3% uplift. Consultants are very rarely called back to the Trust but are expected to in case of emergencies. Weekend on call work involves daily ward rounds of the 2 respiratory ward areas with experienced ANP support.
Provision to the Trust with other medical colleagues of a service in Respiratory Medicine. There will be responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of patients with Respiratory as well as general medical illnesses.
The post holder will be responsible for respiratory and other medical referrals within the Trust and continuing care of patients who are not located on the respiratory ward.
Professional supervision and management of staff in the department, for example doctors in training and Specialist Nurses. The post holder will participate in the training of those doctors in training. The post holder will also be required to participate in teaching.

Qualifications and Training
Essential
1. Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
2. MRCP or equivalent
3. CCST in General Medicine and Respiratory (or within 6 months of receipt at date of interview) or inclusion on the Specialist Register
Desirable
4. An appropriate higher degree in respiratory medicine (MD, PhD or equivalent)
Experience and Clinical Skills
Essential
5. Extensive experience in the management and respiratory patients
6. Experience in Diagnostic bronchoscopy

7. Experience in Cardiopulmonary exercise test reporting
