Based in a prime location in Gateshead opposite the Law Courts, Hathaways Law - a well-respected and established law firm - has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Family Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive (CILEx) to join the Firm at Director Level.
The firm has an excellent reputation locally with clients and fellow professionals in respect of its family law offering which is predominantly public law (Legal Aid funded). The work is varied, and there is a significant amount of Care proceedings within the caseload.
The ideal candidate should have at least 8 years PQE in family law both public law and private law as well as an understanding of Legal Aid.
A keen advocate is preferred, so that fewer complex hearings can be conducted without the need to default to Counsel. Opportunities to develop advocacy skills will be provided.
This role requires someone who is client-focused, empathetic, and skilled at navigating sensitive matters.
Hours: Full-time
Type: Office Based 9-5pm (Monday to Friday)
Key Responsibilities:
1. Manage a diverse caseload of family and private children law matters, including divorce, child arrangements, adoption, and guardianship.
2. Provide clear, practical, and tailored legal advice to clients, ensuring their best interests are upheld.
3. Represent clients in court and liaise effectively with barristers, court officials, and other legal professionals.
4. Draft and review legal documents, including court applications, witness statements, and agreements.
5. Stay updated on changes in family law legislation and case law.
6. Develop and maintain strong client relationships, offering support during emotionally challenging circumstances.
7. Work collaboratively with colleagues and support staff to ensure smooth case progression.
8. Comply with regulatory and compliance standards, including those set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).

Candidate Specification Requirements:
1. Qualified Solicitor with a valid practising certificate in England and Wales.
2. Proven experience in family and children law, including advocacy experience in family courts.
3. Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and Family Law Act 1996.
4. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to handle sensitive cases with empathy and professionalism.
5. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
6. A commitment to achieving the best outcomes for clients, particularly in child-related cases.
Desirable Qualities:
1. Membership or accreditation with Resolution or the Law Society’s Family Law or Children Law Panels.
2. Ability to network and contribute to business development initiatives.
