As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.
We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £250m estates programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.
In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.
We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming and productive place to work.
We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.
At UHD our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.
As a Trust we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.
Job overview
Do you love working as a consultant in Emergency Medicine?
Ever fancied living on the beautiful south coast?
If the answer to the above 2 questions is yes, then University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) may be able to help.
We are looking for substantive consultants in Emergency Medicine to work at UHD - just a stone’s throw from the glorious blue flag beaches of Bournemouth and Poole (we know we're biased).
These posts would initially be based at the Poole Site, the designated Trauma Unit and paediatric unit for east Dorset, ahead of the big move into the BEACH Building in December 2025.
If selected you will be working alongside a vibrant, dedicated and passionate team across both sites and you will have the opportunity to be involved in developing the future service if interested.
If you are interested and want to know more, I can be directly contacted via harry.adlington@uhd.nhs.uk or by calling my secretary on 0300 019 2815 to arrange a chat.
Main duties of the job
The role will involve seeing and assessing all presentations of adults and children with life threatening injury or illness.
Key clinical responsibilities include:
* Provide Consultant led care to all adult and paediatric patients presenting to the Emergency Department with serious illness or injury.
* Lead the department when in the Emergency Physician In Charge (EPIC) role.
* Support and supervision of a large body of resident doctors, whilst in training programmes or trust grade posts.
* Poole Hospital is currently the designated Major Trauma Unit for east Dorset, consultants working at the Poole site are responsible for leading the major trauma team.
* Poole Hospital is also the designated paediatric site, receiving all paediatric ambulance transfers from the community.
* Take part in the on-call rota - which can be off site provided you can return to the department within 30 minutes when required eg Level 1 Trauma Call. On site accommodation is available for those living more than 30 minutes away.
* Adults and children with significant head injuries requiring inpatient care are currently admitted under and managed by the Emergency Medicine consultants, training and supervision for consultants new to this role is provided. This role is set to stop with the final move into the BEACH building.
Working for our organisation
Recently Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals have undergone merger into UHD. At present there is an Emergency Department at both Poole and Bournemouth sites, with RBH being the designated site for PCI and stroke thrombolysis, and Poole being the designated Major Trauma Unit as well as in patient paediatric services.
This is all set to change in 2025 when the Trauma Unit status moves to Bournemouth and ED will move into a new state of the art BEACH Building, alongside Paediatrics, Critical Care and Maternity.
Our values define who we are as #TeamUHD. They underpin everything we do now and in the future. They define how we treat our patients, visitors, and each other, our valued teammates and colleagues.
UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme.
This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term. Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions that you have at interview.
