Purpose of job
The BA (Hons) Jewellery Design and Production seeks an associate lecturer in Critical and Historical Studies on jewellery who will lead and support the development of curricula and teaching across the course that expands the course in critical and contextual directions.
As an associate lecturer, you are responsible for curriculum development and planning, teaching, assessment, administration, and ongoing scholarship within the subject, the broader creative context, and education. You will work collaboratively within a course team, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum in innovative and critical directions supporting the course vision. You will contribute significantly to the quality of learning and teaching, and the support students receive enabling them to complete their modules and overarching studies successfully.
You will also work with the Head of HE, Course Leader, BA Year 1 Leader, students, and other colleagues across the Academy in promoting and developing the subject through conferences, public exhibitions, and other contributions to research and knowledge exchange. You will develop partnerships and collaborations with industry partners as well as bring your own practice to bear on the development of the subject and the course.
Key areas of responsibility
The post-holder will be expected to undertake:
1. Responsibility for undergraduate students’ pastoral support, progress, and attendance, maintaining records and liaising with colleagues as appropriate.
2. Pedagogic and curriculum development that stimulates thought and practice that challenges the canon of critical and historical studies with the aim of promoting diversity and inclusivity.
3. Expand the capacity of the course design to meet the need to expand the curriculum into critical directions.
4. This responsibility is of immediate strategic importance and may develop or change in light of new priorities.
5. The post-holder is expected to uphold and implement the policies and procedures of The Academy.
Academic
1. To undertake teaching as appropriate to your areas of expertise and the subject areas of the Course or Academy.
2. To stay abreast of research and other developments in the subject, with a particular focus on Critical and Historical Studies, and to ensure that these developments are reflected in the curriculum in consultation with colleagues and within the structures and mechanisms established by the Academy.
3. To extend the level of subject expertise and critical understanding on the Course so as to keep the curriculum at the forefront and relevant to a diverse and international range of students.
4. To conduct assessment, formative and summative, which is rigorous, fair, and clear and complies with the policies established by the Academy, validating bodies, and oversight organizations.
5. To provide both academic and pastoral support to students, monitoring progress and attendance, and maintaining appropriate records.
Quality and Enhancement
1. To contribute to strategic planning in relation to the course in areas such as student recruitment, the deployment of resources, research, and knowledge exchange.
2. To contribute to the monitoring of the quality of teaching and learning through continuous course monitoring and to contribute to quality management and enhancement activities across the Academy.
3. To be a member of the Course Committee and/or other committees, including examination boards, as the Head of HE requires.
Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation
1. Ensure that the curriculum is relevant, current, and consistent with the mission and vision for the course.
2. Ensure that the delivery of the curriculum is organized and resourced appropriately to the academic award, and to the learning styles and developmental stages of the students.
3. Plan and manage assessment and ensure students are given constructive and timely feedback that helps them improve.
Student Support and Guidance
1. Contribute to information provided to students by the Academy.
Student Progression and Achievement
1. In liaison with the Admissions and MIS Team, support the maintenance of student records to ensure they are current, accurate, and constructive.
2. Support the recruitment and selection processes applicable to the course, ensuring the correct delivery of the Academy Admissions Policy.
Entrepreneurship and Enterprise
1. Promote a digital culture of critical reflection within the Course and amongst the student and staff community.
2. Operate in a collegiate manner in liaising with appropriate colleagues to contribute to the income-generating and related sponsorship activities of the Academy in areas that are directly related to their Academic Programme and areas of specialism.
Professional
1. To initiate or engage in pedagogic inquiry and teaching development as required with the specific focus of improving student engagement, experience, and progression.
2. To participate in the engagement of students in feedback processes, and in consultation with the course team and course leader, respond to the issues raised through this engagement.
3. In consultation with the Course Leader and BA Year 1 Leader, to liaise with other staff to enhance and extend the educational and creative links between the Course and other courses across the Academy.
4. To undertake scholarly activity (including research, knowledge exchange, or teaching) relevant to the subject.
5. To contribute to the devising and delivery of activities (including income generation) which will benefit students’ educational experience and graduate outcomes.
6. Familiar with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector.
Person Specification
Specialist Knowledge
1. Relevant undergraduate and post-graduate degree in the subject or closely related discipline.
2. PG Cert or equivalent experience (desired).
3. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (desired).
4. A detailed knowledge and deep understanding of the historical development of jewellery from antiquity to the present day.
5. A detailed knowledge and deep understanding of key contemporary debates on the subject of contemporary jewellery.
6. Knowledge of subject-specific research in an academic and/or professional environment.
7. Knowledge of delivering teaching and learning within a specialist subject base.
Skills
1. Communicates effectively orally and in writing adapting the medium and the message for a diverse audience in an inclusive and accessible way.
2. Plans, prioritises, and manages resources effectively to achieve objectives.

1. Experience of teaching & assessment in a higher education environment in a relevant field of practice.
2. Curriculum development experience (desired).
3. Familiar with debates and research relating to decolonising the curriculum and awarding gaps within the HE Sector (desired).
4. Experience in writing and publishing, reviewing, and copy-editing academic texts.
5. Experience in developing learning and teaching activities and assessments on creative and essay writing.
6. Evidence of using contacts within the subject peer group to develop partnerships or collaboration.
7. Evidence of research, knowledge exchange, and/or professional practice that contributes to the advancement of the subject and is relevant to the goals of the Course and Academy (desired).
