Job summary
We are looking for an individual to fill this replacement post within the Cellular Pathology Department at St James's University Hospital.
This is a full-time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of Dental, Head & Neck, and Endocrine pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), the Leeds Dental Institute, and the region. The service currently has two specialist histopathologists, one being full-time and one being half-time. This post will represent an addition to the current team and is a direct replacement of a recent full-time vacancy. The case mix is extremely diverse and includes oral & maxillofacial, ENT, salivary gland, odontogenic, cervical node, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal gland histopathology specimens. Thyroid, salivary gland, and neck node fine-needle aspirate samples are also covered by the group. There is a large postgraduate training programme in the region which includes medical and dental trainees which the group provides training for. There are strong links with the academic department of pathology with the largest clinical academic training programme in the country.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent). They should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in head & neck, dental, and endocrine pathology and demonstrable interest and experience in the specialty. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable.

Job responsibilities
In relation to this post, it is a full-time (10 PA) replacement consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. Our department works in a collaborative and flexible way to deliver a sub-specialised pathology service tailored to the needs of the tertiary centre.
The appointee will have specialist experience in the areas of head, neck, and endocrine diagnostic surgical pathology, and also have expertise in the reporting of head, neck, and endocrine cytopathology specimens. We have developed the principles of the Royal College of Pathologists guidelines to try and achieve full staffing and an equitable distribution of work among the consultants in our department.
Any candidate who is unable to work full-time for personal reasons will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential
* Should have successfully completed a recognised training programme in Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology leading to a CCST (or equivalent) or Histopathology leading to a CCT (or equivalent).
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable
* Dedicated training time in specialist Head & Neck, dental and endocrine pathology.
* Relevant higher degree such as PhD or Masters.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Qualifications
Essential
* FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
* Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Dental Council (GDC) or General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* YOUR REGISTRATION NUMBER MUST BE STATED CLEARLY IN YOUR APPLICATION.
* Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.

* Specifically, must demonstrate higher experience and specialist training in head & neck, dental and endocrine histopathology (including experience in application and interpretation of molecular testing platforms) and related cytopathology including thyroid, salivary gland and lymph node FNA samples.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Desirable
* Clinical experience in oral medicine.
* Competence in the diagnosis of odontogenic lesions, fibro-osseous lesions and dental hard tissue anomalies.
* Clinical experience / competence in reporting / diagnosis of adrenal gland pathology.
