Job Description
Component Design Engineer
Full time
Bristol/Hybrid
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Component Design Engineer to join our Hot Section team within ET&S Turbomachinery.
The UK Transmissions team is based in Bristol and Derby and supports both Defence and Civil applications. This role is based in Bristol and will primarily support Defence tasks.
As a turbine system engineer, you will be responsible for the design of a variety of static &/or rotating components including vanes, blades, seals & associated items.
These components form the core of all gas turbine engines and operate to the limit of technology to meet demanding operational requirements and provide safe and reliable operation. Tasks can cover the full life cycle, including R&T, NPI and support of in-service products.
As a Component Design Engineer you will be supporting Hot Section component design.
You will be responsible for the on-time delivery and quality of component design definition artefacts i.e. documents, models, definitions that meet system level and sub-system requirements.
This role will directly report to the Capability Lead – Hot Section.
What you will be doing:
* Deliver design solutions for component(s), complex assemblies in consideration of safety, manufacturing capability, product physical and functional robustness.
* Deliver definition to appropriate stakeholder groups’ requirements (e.g. manufacturing (domestic/external), project customers, analysis team etc) in accordance with associated agreed policies via conventional and future state approaches (Model Based Definition in association with the Model Based Environment).
* Create and use automated and integrated tool sets. When repeat design is anticipated, create automated work flows to enable the design of the component utilising house style, standard features, and standard assessments to define the optimum design as part of automated MBD, manufacture and measurement definitions.
* Enable through life Supply Chain Design and Lifecycle profitability for mature product fleets through the application and possibly creation of various mechanisms (non-conformance management, drawing alteration requests, repair instructions, engine manual limits and technical variants (TV)).
* Carry out analyses using formula-based calculations and/or automated workflows for dimensioning of parts and components (e.g. stability, stiffness, profiles, balance point, weights) and where appropriate, using analytical rules, tools and methods to underwrite the design solution against requirements.
Who we’re looking for:
* Bachelor's degree or Master's in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience.
* Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and have an understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts which include but are not limited to manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering and product definition.
* An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters.
* Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks.
* Good communication and presentation skills at all levels of the organisation.
* Knowledge & experience of turbine systems static &/or rotating components design would be advantageous although not essential.
* Candidates should be competent in the use of current PLM [product lifecycle management] systems. Proficiency in the use of Siemens NX & Teamcenter is preferred although not essential as training will be given.
