The post holder will be recognised as a clinical expert with advanced clinical specialist knowledge and skills acquired through higher degree and specialist training who will work autonomously within the MDT to provide excellent individualised clinical care and management to babies and their families in a variety of settings including the neonatal unit, delivery suite, postnatal wards and transitional care.
Demonstration of safe clinical care and decision-making, including assessment and use of diagnostic skills, will utilise advanced skills to provide direct clinical care working in accordance with local and national guidelines and policies and as part of the ANNP/ACP team contribute to the tier 1 medical rota with an expectation of progression to some parts of the tier 2 rota over an agreed period.
Main duties of the job
* Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate treatment/interventions and care for infants on the NNU.
* Clinically examine and assess infant needs from a physiological and psychological perspective, and plan clinical care accordingly.
* Assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate interventions/treatments for infants with prematurity and other diseases of the new-born.
* Diagnose acute conditions, integrating both drug and non-drug based treatments into a management plan.
* Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to infant need and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and local protocols, and within scope of practice.
* Work with families in order to support compliance and concordance to prescribed treatments.
* Prioritise health problems and intervene appropriately to assist the infant in complex, urgent or emergency situations, including initiation of effective emergency care.
* Support families to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles, and apply principles of self care.
* Assess, identify and refer infants presenting with all health needs in accordance with current policy.
* Refer infants to other disciplines / specialities.
