Main duties of the job
As a Consultant Gastroenterologist, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality gastroenterology services, including both diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. You will take part in the "GI bleed" on-call rota and work collaboratively to manage patients on the Digestive Disease Unit ward under the Consultant of the Week model.
A subspecialty interest in Nutrition and Hepatobiliary (ERCP/EUS) is desirable to support service expansion. The role also involves teaching and training resident doctors, nurses, and medical students, as well as active participation in governance, audit, and continuing medical education (CME). Additionally, you will contribute to research relevant to your specialty, ensuring the delivery of safe, evidence-based care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This role offers a balance of specialist clinical work, leadership, and service development within a well-established gastroenterology team. The successful candidate will contribute to outpatient clinics, endoscopy services, and inpatient care while participating in the GI bleed on-call rota. Beyond clinical duties, the post-holder will be expected to engage in teaching and mentoring medical trainees, take an active role in clinical governance and audits, and support the ongoing development of gastroenterology services.
With opportunities for research, quality improvement initiatives, and involvement in governance meetings, this position provides a platform to shape and enhance the department's future direction. Commitment to continuing medical education (CME), professional development, and compliance with trust policies is essential.

Qualifications
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CST) at time of interview.
* MRCP or equivalent
* Subspeciality accreditation in Nutrition
Clinical Experience
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CST in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine.
* Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within Gastroenterology and general medicine.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
* Provide evidence based clinical care
* Demonstrate JAG competencies for upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy.
* Five years supervised training in an appropriate StR equivalent training programme
* Demonstrate a high level of endoscopic performance data
* Ability to perform high level endoscopic therapeutics ie. EMR
* Advanced training in Nutrition
* Experience in managing patients with complex nutritional needs
* Previous experience of participation in research projects
Management and Administrative Experience
* Ability to contribute to the efficient & smooth running of Gastroenterology departments.
* Ability to organise and manage out and inpatient priorities, investigations, and treatment.
* Experience of audit management
