Senior Biomedical Scientist - Blood Transfusion

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientists for the role of Senior Biomedical Scientist within the Blood Transfusion laboratories at University Hospitals Dorset.
* To help manage and co-ordinate the day-to-day technical activities of the Transfusion Department, prioritising work so that a safe and timely service is available and meets patient's needs.
* You are required to have extensive experience in all aspects of Transfusion at a specialist level.
* You will need to be well-motivated and demonstrate the ability to lead colleagues.
* The applicant must be able to prioritise and organise their own workload and possess excellent communication skills.
* Professional and personal development is encouraged and will be supported by the department.
* The successful applicant will be expected to be able to work out of hours where required to support the service.
* Knowledge of BSQR, GPG and transfusion related guidelines would be advantageous.
Please note this is a cross site working role. Working location will be based on department priorities. Therefore, being able to work flexibly is essential to this role.
Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital
Note: This is a UHD post working cross site at both Poole and Bournemouth

Main duties of the job
* To co-ordinate and participate in the routine processing of specimens; and to allocate work to the other BMS and MLA staff to ensure a smooth workflow.
* To ensure that for each sample the appropriate requested investigations are performed and components supplied in a timely manner.
* To ensure that specialised and urgent specimens are appropriately dealt with.
* To participate in the technical work as required.
* To ensure appropriate maintenance and safe use of equipment.
* To assist in the development of rotas in conjunction with the other senior biomedical staff and ensure that they are operated correctly, and to liaise with the other senior BMS staff to provide continuous cover from the start of each day.
* To co-ordinate adequate supplies of laboratory consumables and reagents and co-ordinate their stock control.
* To contribute to audit activities.
* To contribute to the maintenance and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
* MSc or equivalent
* Willing to pursue further qualifications
Experience
* At least 3 years post HCPC Registration experience of working in a Haematology/Coagulation/Transfusion laboratory
* To continue the learning process through academic or practical experience
* Evidence of developing staff by teaching, training and delegation
* Experience of working out of hours
* Possess highly developed technical skills and adept at all laboratory procedures
* Ability to interpret diagnostic results and take appropriate action
* Proven training ability
* Ability to organise own workload and the day to day organisation and staffing of work section
* Evaluate and appraise new methods and technologies
* Previous experience of analyser and process validation and verification
* Prepare presentations as part of laboratory training programme
Knowledge
* Thorough, specialist understanding of Transfusion Medicine
* Understands Transfusion and its application in clinical practice and public health
* Comprehensive understanding of quality control/quality assurance and laboratory safety procedures
* Understanding of basic management practice
* Understanding of the Good Practice Guidelines for blood establishments and hospital blood banks
