Purpose
The Principal Examiner ensures that the standards of externally assessed units/modules/components are maintained and consistent with the unit specification and assessment criteria. The Principal Examiner oversees the standardisation of Examiners.
Core Services and Expectations
1. Act at all times in a way that does not bring Pearson into disrepute.
2. Read all Pearson policies and guidance prior to undertaking contracted activities.
3. Respect the confidentiality of centres and learners.
4. Attend any relevant meetings or training sessions as requested by Pearson.
5. Adhere to deadlines and ensure all work is carried out to the best of your ability.
6. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in a professional manner.
7. Have personal IT equipment capable of running Pearson software, with appropriate virus protection and a secure internet connection.
8. Communicate with Pearson and its centres in a timely manner.
9. Raise any concerns regarding malpractice, maladministration, or safeguarding issues.
Role Specific Services and Expectations
1. Ensure timely delivery of contracted units/modules/components.
2. Update mark schemes/guidance before pre-standardisation meetings.
3. Lead meetings and participate in appeals and post-series reviews.
4. Select and mark items for validity as agreed.
5. Mark live candidates’ responses as part of quality assurance.
6. Prepare and collate materials for standardisation.
7. Support supervisors and examiners.
8. Monitor progress of supervisors/examiners.
9. Review responses sent for clarification.
10. Act as a senior point of escalation across the quality assurance process.
11. Submit reports on series/candidate performance.
12. Provide support and written responses to complaints where required.
Skills and Competencies
As the Principal Examiner, you will be expected to demonstrate the following:
1. Experience and knowledge of quality assurance and assessment practice.
2. History of moderation and/or marking a regulated qualification.
3. Proven ability to provide and co-ordinate training.
4. Comprehensive knowledge of the specification for your specialist sector.
5. High level of IT proficiency.
6. Leadership experience in delivering qualifications.
Experience and Qualifications

Vocational Qualifications (e.g., BTEC/FS)
1. A minimum of one full academic year of teaching experience in the relevant subject area/sector within the last 8 years.
2. Relevant CPD evidence in the subject area/sector within the last 12 months.
3. A UK recognised teaching qualification.
General Qualifications (e.g., GCSE/A LEVEL)
1. Degree.
