Healthcare Scientist (Rare Disease Network of Excellence)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Scientist to join our team working within the NHS rare and inherited disease NHS genomic Network of Excellence team in Manchester.
The postholder is expected to be a postdoctoral scientist who will utilise their specialist scientific expertise in genomics.
The role will primarily focus on the re-analysis of whole genome data (WGS) from patients who have been tested via NHS Genomic Medicine Service. This analysis will include the use of existing tertiary analysis software and also software applications that are currently in development.
The role will involve working closely with the teams of the Rare Conditions and Advanced Diagnostics themes of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the University of Manchester (UoM) research group of Prof. Siddharth Banka.
This is a 2-year fixed-term, full-time post based at the North-West Genomics Laboratory Hub, St. Mary's Hospital, Manchester.

Main duties of the job
This role will involve:
The re-analysis of whole genome data (WGS) from patients who have been tested via NHS Genomic Medicine Service. This will involve the use of existing tertiary analysis software and also software applications that are currently in development.
Evaluation of published developments and innovations relevant to the Rare & Inherited Disease Network of Excellence, and their potential to transfer into clinical practice.
Evaluation and implementation of new methods, technologies and equipment relevant to the Rare & Inherited Disease Network of Excellence.
Analysis of data from various genomic analysis instruments involving the use of specialist software and relevant bioinformatic tools.
Writing of reports and other documents as the project progresses.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc at a least 2(i) in an appropriate scientific subject
* PhD in the field of genomics/genetics (or equivalent)
Knowledge and Skills
* Practical experience in relevant laboratory techniques and troubleshooting of assays
* Experience in research and development in a relevant field, including evidence of authorship or contribution to peer-reviewed publications
* Knowledge of principles of clinical laboratory genetics (in area of expertise)
* Able to critically analyse and interpret scientific data
* Able to concentrate at all times and work under pressure
* Excellent organisational and planning skills
* Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
* Knowledge of bioinformatics and analysis of complex genomic data
* Proven experience in the drafting and finalisation of complex protocol and report writing
* Experience in genomic assay validation and verification
* Experience in writing grants / research funding applications
* Knowledge and experience of supervision and management
* Knowledge and experience of LIMS and other laboratory IT systems
* Knowledge and experience of automation and robotic liquid handling
