This is a great opportunity to be part of a team that works together to safeguard child migrants. Our work is varied and rewarding, with an inclusive culture, attracting people from different backgrounds with different identities, perspectives, and lived experiences. You’ll work in a space that is fast-paced, but where your caseload will be reasonable.
About the role
A qualified social worker, you’ll join the Irregular Migration Intake Unit (IMIU), which deals with irregular migrants. The unit registers and screens people arriving in the UK illegally, establishing the identity of asylum claimants from small boat arrivals, lorry drops and other clandestine arrivals.
Working with the Kent Intake Unit (KIU), which focuses particularly on unaccompanied children, you’ll identify youngsters and make sure they are placed into care quickly, with the help of Kent Children’s Services. This involves determining the age of new arrivals, identifying those at risk of exploitation, trafficking or harm, and putting safeguarding and child protection measures in place. Many of the children will have immediate needs such as food, clothing and healthcare, and you’ll make sure these needs are met. You’ll also be expected to assess family relationships and see that children are either reunited with family or removed to prevent the risk of child trafficking. It’s crucial, challenging work, but also highly rewarding.
About you
A registered and qualified social worker, you’ll have extensive experience at a local authority. With this background, you’ll have the expertise and confidence to excel in a fast-moving and high-profile area of work, and to take decisions and responsibility.
Your knowledge should cover age assessment and child protection in an immigration setting, plus safeguarding laws, human rights, and asylum processes. On top of this, you’ll need good communication skills to create reports and connect with the people you’ll work with.
Please note that you’ll also need a full valid driving licence.
Training and development
We keep safety uppermost in all that we do. That’s why we’ll train you in personal safety techniques to help keep you and your colleagues safe and secure.
Annualised Hours Working (AHW)
