Full Time
Derby
Why Rolls-Royce?
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Engineer with Group Leader responsibilities for the Radiation Physics, Shielding and Criticality team in Analytical and Whole Plant Engineering to join Rolls-Royce Submarines in Derby.
We’re a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority. Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.
The work of the team is to design and analyse radiation shield solutions, support criticality safety analysis and provide radiation physics advice to component and work package owners across the Submarines enterprise. Knowledge of ionising radiation and shielding principles, radiation transport, the fission process and reactivity control would be advantageous.
We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.
Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.
What you will be doing:
* Reporting to the Engineering Manager – Core Performance, you will lead a high performing team of 13 engineers and be accountable for the delivery of their major technical work packages to agreed time, quality, and cost.
* Agreeing technical requirements and analysis outputs, chairing gated reviews and managing stakeholder and panel requirements for analysis tasks.
* Lead the recruitment of 3 new engineers to resource a growing portfolio of work across the Dreadnought, SSN AUKUS, R&T, and Core Manufacturing projects.
* Support the development and wellbeing of your team.
* Work with the other Core Performance group leaders to improve employee engagement through championing improvement activities within the AWPE business unit.
* Conduct horizon scanning activities and developing analysis programmes to support the CADMID product lifecycle and Research and Technology programme.
* Monitor your engineers’ progress against their plans.
* Work with DBU specialists, Chief Design Engineers and external stakeholders at BAE Systems and the MoD to maintain technical governance and deliver products that meet the Nuclear Safety Requirements.
* Be responsible for the management, technical supervision and integration of work undertaken by Managed Service Partners and Subcontractors to meet delivery commitments of the delegated projects.
Who we are looking for:
* Master's or PhD in Physics or Engineering, or regional equivalent qualification or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
* An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems.
* A track record of successfully delivering packages of work or leading engineering teams.
We’re an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. The more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
