Job Overview Hand Fellow in Plastic Surgery based at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough There is participation in the registrar on-call rota which is a 1 in 7 non-resident on call covering plastic surgery admissions to Wexham Park Hospital. This job plan is flexible to maximise training and some service commitments with the intention that approximately 70% of commitments be “hand” related and 30% be “service” related. The post can count towards NTN training in plastic surgery as OOPT. Main duties of the job The post holder will gain hands-on experience in the management of emergency and elective hand surgery including peripheral nerve surgery, common congenital hand surgery, scaphoid fractures, scaphoid non-unions, wrist arthritis and common elective conditions The post holder will benefit from the array of experience and surgery in the department between the 8 consultants. The Hand Fellow will have flexibility to optimise their training experience as well as meet individual training requirements. They may attend all department meetings including clinical governance, mortality and morbidity and clinical conference and be expected to contribute to the departmental teaching programme. Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities There are 4 plastic surgery consultants with a subspecialty interest in hand and wrist surgery and 3 orthopaedic hand surgeons. Operating lists and clinics take place at all three main hospital sites but the majority of the work is based at Wexham Park and Heatherwood. The post holder will be expected to attend the monthly hand and wrist MDT. Depending on training and service requirements there will be opportunities to undertake work in other subspecialties including microsurgery, breast reconstruction, skin cancer and aesthetic surgery. The successful candidate will be expected to take an active role in audit and academic development as well as the teaching and supervision of junior trainees. The unit has a strong history of contribution to national trials and audits with plenty of opportunity for involvement. Full encouragement and support is given to those that wish to sit the British or European Hand Diplomas. The ability to work flexibly, cohesively and in collaboration with the existing teams is a necessary requirement for the post. The post holder will become proficient in Wide Awake Local Anaesthetic No Tourniquet (WALANT) hand surgery including the management of acute scaphoid fractures and trapeziectomies. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Basic medical qualifications MRCS or equivalent Completed Core Surgical Training (or equivalent) Desirable criteria Hand Diploma FRCS (Plast) To have completed a minimum of 4 years specialist training in Plastic Surgery Experience Essential criteria Broad experience in general plastic surgery. Competence in hand trauma Evidence of ability to make decisions at registrar level and to manage complex clinical problems. Skills & Knowledge Essential criteria Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a registrar in a busy District General Hospital. Training in clinical management. Good spoken and written English. Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
