About RHL: Richards Hogg Lindley is a trading name of Charles Taylor Adjusting handling complex marine losses for shipowner clients around the world. The team of Average Adjusters, Claims Handlers, and Marine Engineers provide marine claims adjustment and advice on all levels of loss, including Hull & Machinery and General Average. Additionally, our Marine Engineering team works closely with Charles Taylor Adjusting’s Yacht Practice, which provides a full claims management service on all types and sizes of vessels from the first notification of loss to the settlement of the claim.
The Role: The Richards Hogg Lindley Average Adjusters and Charles Taylor Adjusting claims team rely on in-house technical advice from a team of experienced marine engineers that have a seagoing background. The role includes carrying out desk top reviews and damage investigations relating to ship hull & machinery, yacht, and other marine industry issues on behalf of the various marine adjusting teams, owners, insurers, or lawyers. The role requires experience in machinery failure and an interest in technical failure investigations, based on a broad range of marine engineering general knowledge, a knowledge and understanding of various vessel types (including yachts), experience of onboard machinery operation and maintenance, and ship and machinery repair procedures. The role may require worldwide travel at very short notice.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Desk top review and investigation relating to hull & machinery damages as necessary to answer adjusters’ questions.
2. Provide technical advice on the nature, extent, and cause of damage on all damage types.
3. Travel at short notice to perform onsite surveys as requested by RHL/CTA.
4. Review repair accounts and provide independent cost approvals.
5. Chair technical meetings with superintendents, repairers, and insurers as required.
6. Act as technical umpire in times of impasse between insurer and shipowner.
7. Prepare technical reports in English, written with the non-technical reader in mind.
8. Provide peer review of other marine engineers’ findings and reports.
9. Carry out and assist with business development and marketing activities.
10. Provide technical presentations to adjusting teams and clients worldwide.
11. Any other ad hoc duties which fall within the individual’s abilities.
Required Skills:
1. Preferably a HND or similar educational qualification related to marine engineering.
2. Ex-seagoing marine engineer up to Second Engineer or equivalent.
3. Working towards or registered IEng/CEng with IMarEST.
4. Good understanding of engineering failures and the required repairs.
5. Physically able to attend site (including boarding ships) and able to travel worldwide at short notice.
6. Good command of English, both written and spoken.
