This post is to support the Occupational Health team and to enhance the quality of service provided to the Trust and other clients. The role is varied, reflecting the demands of the Occupational Health Service. The post-holder will undertake clinical duties, including health surveillance, immunisations, and paper screening, as well as required administrative duties. This will be in response to requests from the Head of Service and the needs of the service. The post-holder will be proactive and have a flexible approach in order to positively influence the health of employees.
The post holder will participate in the provision of a high quality and comprehensive Occupational Health Service to Homerton Hospital via Barts Health NHS. The post holder will undertake a range of basic health protection/surveillance activities to Trust employees and external contracts.
This will include:
* The administration of immunisations under General Written Instruction as required,
* Phlebotomy,
* Vision screening,
* Skin checks,
* Health surveillance: for instance, spirometry and audiology,
* Urinalysis,
* Blood pressure,
* Participate in the pre-employment health clearance.
Main duties, responsibilities, and results areas:
* The post holder must be able to communicate effectively whilst delivering high standards of care to a number of stakeholders. The post holder will be able to utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with staff at all levels, as well as external organisations and the public. In addition, the post holder will be able to share knowledge with their colleagues.
* Develop and undertake immunisation clinics both on site and at satellite clinics if necessary.
* Provide advice in relation to occupational immunisations and travel immunisations.
* Undertake phlebotomy.
* To ensure employees are informed of results of tests carried out.
* Undertake keystone eye tests and lung function tests.
* Participate in maintaining the risk recall register and exposure prone procedure register.
* Participate in pre-employment health clearance processes.
* Maintain stock levels for clinic rooms and order vaccines and equipment as required.
* Demonstrate competent clinical practice and ensure compliance with Trust policies, local clinical guidelines, and related legislation.
* Promote and maintain high standards of health and safety whilst carrying out clinical practice.
* Maintain confidentiality.
* Promote and participate in occupational health initiatives.
* Participate in local inductions.
* Promote and participate in the annual influenza campaign.
* Maintain accurate clinical records as per NMC guidance and in accordance with policy, be it paper or electronic.
* Develop an understanding of the effective management of resources.
* Participate in auditing.
* Participate within the multidisciplinary team.
* Develop professionally and use reflective practice and evidence-based research.
* Participate in the appraisal system.
* Work within NMC Code of Professional Conduct, Trust policies, and local policies; clinical guidelines.
* Engage in teaching activities and departmental development initiatives.
* Support and attend any off-site clinics as necessary to support the delivery of Occupational Health.
* To comply with the guidelines provided via Notes for the Record and Work instruction documents and manage and organise Cohort IT information needed on a day-to-day basis.
* To provide information and non-clinical advice to clients regarding OH services and redirect to appropriate individual/service as necessary.
* To initiate and maintain good communication channels with all members of the multidisciplinary team and clients. To communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, and share information with relevant staff members to ensure the efficient running of the service.
* To report any problems and/or concerns related to or affecting your area of responsibility to the senior Occupational Health advisor on duty and/or the Head of Service, escalating as appropriate. To ensure that any complaints received are reported to the Head of Service.
* To actively participate in team meetings and contribute with ideas and suggestions for service improvement.
* Assist in maintaining a safe work environment, reporting any issues that present a risk appropriately, including reporting on Datix.
* Be aware of safeguarding issues and policies and report any concerns.
* Call for help in an emergency and act to contain risk.
* Participate in service meetings and contribute to the development of policy by making constructive suggestions as to how services can be improved.
* To manage needlestick injury including follow-up appointment and administration of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
* The job description is not intended to be exhaustive and it is likely that duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after consultation with the postholder.
* The post holder might be required to work across the Trust at any time throughout the duration of his/her contract, which may entail travel and working at different hospitals.
Important Requirements:
* NMC Registration
* At least 6 months in an Occupational Health setting in the last 3 years
* Robust clinical knowledge, strong initiative, and a proactive approach to work
* Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
* Honesty and integrity, and a caring patient-centred approach
