The role
As a General Maintenance Assistant, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Reporting to the Director of Technology Delivery and working alongside the Focus Area Lead, you will be providing technical leadership, independent technical oversight and subject matter expertise to the Surface Effectors engineering teams across a wide portfolio of programmes, ranging from the support of large calibre gun systems and close-in weapon systems for the Royal Navy to integrating C4I systems on small boats.
Day-to-day, you’ll have the following responsibilities:
1. Provide governance and oversight of the technical work of the Surface Effectors engineering teams, to ensure that our technical output is optimally compliant to customer requirements.
2. Ensure that the appropriate level of independent assurance is applied to the technical output, including chairing design reviews, and conducting independent review of deliverables.
3. Help to grow the Surface Effectors business through supporting bids and business development activity and representing Babcock in external meetings related to a range of opportunities.
4. Ensure technical risks and issues are being appropriately managed and mitigated.
5. Ensure that our solutions are safe to build, commission and operate by our suppliers, customers, and end users, and that they meet all legislative requirements.
This role is full time and is a hybrid role with 2 days per week onsite at Devonport.
Essential experience of the Chief Engineer – Weapons and Communications:
6. Significant experience and subject matter expertise in Defence equipment/systems design, test and qualification using a formal systems engineering approach
7. Experience of overseeing the technical work of others, including reviewing designs and documentation, and authorising the release of deliverables
8. Able to communicate complex concepts and technologies, clearly and digestibly, to non-specialists, from the most junior colleague to the most senior Customer
Qualifications for the Chief Engineer – Weapons and Communications:
9. Preferably master’s degree level education in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and a Chartered Engineer at a relevant institution
Security Clearance
10. The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain SC security clearance for this role.
