The ERAS Plus Nurse contributes to the provision of specialist nursing for Colorectal and Urology patients, practicing within the multi-disciplinary team, providing:
1. Physiological pre-surgical assessment of the patient, including autonomous referral of the patient onto other healthcare professionals.
2. Providing psychological care to the patient undergoing major abdominal surgery.
3. Providing specialist advice and education to patients, families, carers, and staff on Enhanced Recovery +, in both hospital and the community.
4. Assessing patients, planning, implementing care, providing specialist advice; maintaining associated healthcare records.
5. Coordinating other healthcare professionals involved in the care of Colorectal/Urology Enhanced Recovery Patients, including surgeons, anaesthetists, pre-op assessment team, acute pain service, stoma care service, physiotherapists, dieticians, and ward nursing staff (does not line manage these staff).
6. Providing specialist education & training to other staff and students.
7. Undertaking research and leading clinical audits in own specialist area.
8. Setting up and coordinating surgery school/liaising with ERAS pre-assessment team.
9. Linking in with community service for pre-habilitation and community-based rehabilitation through activity program.

Job Responsibilities
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develop, implement and evaluate standards of care, protocols and patient pathways for ERAS+ and ensure maintenance and adherence to these agreed standards of care.
2. Analyse relevant national policy, advise on impact for service and lead the implementation of changes and evaluation of processes in partnership with the ERAS+ leads and MDT.
3. Provide specialist clinical advice to all grades of medical, nursing staff and multi-disciplinary team members within surgery.
4. Formulate, implement and review new policies as required to improve standards in clinical practice in all aspects of ERAS+.
5. Plan and manage your own workload and the workload of the service in a flexible manner ensuring that service provision meets the needs of the patients.
6. Ensure appropriate verbal and written information is available to all patients and relatives in relation to ERAS+.
7. Assist in the development of business plans for developments in ERAS+ with the appropriate divisional business managers.
8. Coordinate and chair Trust wide ERAS+ meetings.
9. In collaboration with the Stepping Hill audit team ensure regular and robust monitoring and auditing of the quality, benefits and productivity achieved within ERAS+.
10. Alongside the Colorectal CNS monitor and evaluate patient experience for patients on the ERAS+ programme.
11. Recognise, understand and accept the requirement to act as an advocate for patients, carers, service and organisation.
Communications
1. Attend meetings with the Colorectal Cancer CNS, Business Group Heads of Nursing, as required.
2. Ensure patients receive appropriate verbal and written information and support in relation to their surgical treatment and discharge post intervention.
3. Facilitate open and effective communication within the specialist team and external organisations.
4. Ensure patient pathways are supported by appropriate documentation.
5. Develop links with the Clinical Network and other specialist services to facilitate the sharing of good practice as required.
6. Lead by example, utilising communication skills to ensure timely and effective communication with patients, staff, relatives and carers in relation to care issues.
7. Assist in the management of patient, relative and staff concerns, liaising with staff in the Patient and Customer Services Department as necessary.
8. Seek support and advice on matters outside experience and authority.
Responsibility for Patient Care
1. Provide specialist advice, support and leadership to patients, carers and staff on issues relating to Enhanced Recovery after Surgery +.
2. Act as a role model at all times and contribute to the provision of nursing expertise and specialist knowledge.
3. As part of Personalised Care for Cancer, work with the Cancer Care Coordinator and Colorectal Cancer CNS team to provide Personalised Care and Support Planning (PCSP) for all cancer patients referred to the service and ensure that any actions are undertaken and communicated appropriately.
4. Promote self-management, undertaking risk stratification to determine those who can self-manage and those who require education and support to facilitate self-management.
5. Maintain accurate patient records, by collecting, collating, recording, evaluating and reporting information under the supervision of the CNS.
6. Attend the MDT meetings as required and actively contribute to the discussion, decision making and care planning for individual patients planned for surgical intervention.
7. Establish and maintain a highly effective communication with patients and carers in order to develop a therapeutic relationship within which sensitive, distressing and complex issues are often addressed.
8. Assess patients information needs and provide relevant information.
9. Assist in the promotion of patient and public experience feedback through local initiatives to drive innovation and change.
10. Ensure the use of risk assessments and health and safety management, utilising the Trusts incident reporting system, to improve the quality of patient care.
11. Encourage and promote an evidence-based culture in staff through the use of cancer specific pathways, procedures and protocols of care within a multidisciplinary approach.

Person Specification
Education and Qualification
* Registered General Nurse with experience working within Colorectal Surgery.
* 1st degree or Equivalent experience/qualification in speciality.
* Evidence of continuing professional development in related speciality.
* Evidence of providing written & verbal communications to consultants and GP as integral part of caseload management.
Knowledge
* Knowledge of clinical governance risk management valid consent and withdrawal of consent.
* Aware of national/local agenda and changes to improve colorectal services i.e. GM Health and social care partnership, GM Cancer, Personalised care for cancer.
Experience
* Patient teaching/ Adult education.
* Experience working at a senior level with patients with colorectal/ urology surgery/ disease.
* Evidence of having been responsible for day to day supervision or coordination of staff in a clinical setting.
* Experience of audit or research (i.e. patient experience, service development).
* Evidence of communication skills e.g. implementing change, dealing with conflict and delivering significant news.
