The newly created post is located within the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, which provides a variety of healthcare services covering the Lake district and is also close to the beautiful Scottish Borders.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Pharmacy Department at the Cumberland Infirmary as a Rotational Pharmacy Technician working with our Aseptics, Dispensary and Medicines management teams.
Main duties of the job
* Dispense pharmaceutical preparations for in-patients, outpatients and discharge prescriptions, including label generation using the pharmacy computer system, interpreting handwritten instructions from medical, nursing, technical and pharmacist staff.
* Interpret prescriptions and issue stock in order to maintain stock levels.
* Participate in systems for the Use of Patients Own Medicines / Individual Dispensing for Patients / Self-Medication on completion of ward services training pack.
* Advise patients on the correct use of medicines, knowing when to refer to a more experienced member of staff.
* Advise nursing staff on the safe handling and storage of drugs.
* Be aware of, and understand the handling requirements, spillages and needle stick injuries when preparing cytotoxic drugs, including the necessity to report untoward incidents promptly to a senior member of staff.
* Participate in the pharmacy technician rota in accordance with the needs of the service and the policy of the pharmacy department.
* Record electronically all drug interventions identified and dealt with whilst working on allocated wards and in the dispensary.
* Document, and assist with documentation of, medication errors identified at ward level and in the dispensary.
* Participate in systems for achieving efficient and effective stock control.
* Assist in all aspects of the pharmacy computer system.
* Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Person specification
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Services Skills (Competence) or equivalent.
* BTEC pharmacy services underpinning knowledge National Certificate or recognised equivalents
* Must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* A1 assessors award
* Accredited training in the use of Microsoft applications e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook
Experience
* Experience of a range of technical pharmaceutical duties during training
* Knowledge of Individual patient dispensing systems
* Experience of working in an aseptic services/sterile manufacturing unit within a hospital environment.
* Top-up procedures.
Knowledge
* In-house distribution checking pack, or equivalent.
* In-house ward services training pack or equivalent.
* Aseptic Services training pack or equivalent.
* Good technical skills across a full range of duties
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
