Working in collaboration with the Matron for Theatres and Matrons for the Adult Critical Care Unit This new Matron post will work across the Surgical HDU and Theatre Recovery areas, and will be responsible for providing exceptional senior clinical leadership to these busy and acute areas.
Patient safety is fundamental to the excellence of the Adult Critical Care and Perioperative services and the Matron is responsible for ensuring the consistent delivery of evidence based, safe and effective nursing, infection prevention and safeguarding standards.
The SHDU comprises of 12 level 2 beds providing high dependency care to support the elective care pathways at the Royal London Hospital.
The successful post holder will work closely with Matron colleagues for the Adult Critical Care Unit (service comprises 44 critical care beds – 22 level 3 and 22 level 2) and the Operating Theatre (comprising of 20 operating theatres and associated areas across the third and fourth floors of the RLH). These are dynamic and fast paced units caring for patients from a range of clinical specialties including major trauma, orthopaedics, neurosciences, vascular, urology, renal, hepatobiliary, colorectal and gynae-oncology.
The post holder is expected to work with autonomy to provide highly specialised professional advice to colleagues to ensure high standards of direct care delivery.
The role of Matron is predominantly concerned with ensuring the delivery of high standards of patient centred care ensuring the cost-effective use of resources. It combines clinical expertise, leadership and educational/research skills with managerial and professional responsibilities.
The post holder will have overall accountability for the day to day management of the nursing service for critical care. The post holder will practice at an advanced level demonstrating a high level of autonomy and clinical decision-making. They will work as a highly specialised member of the inter-professional team to ensure that the needs of the patient are met at all times and that staffing is at an appropriate level to meet patient needs.
The post holder will take ultimate responsibility for the standard of the environment within his/her identified area of responsibility, ensuring patients’ nutritional needs are met and staff maintain cleanliness as defined by national standards. The post holder will ensure that good infection control practice and high standards of nursing care are given. The post holder will be accessible and visible to staff, patients and visitors. The post holder will ensure that patients are treated with respect and dignity.
The post holder might be required to work across the Trust at any time throughout the duration of his/her contract. This may entail travel and working at different hospital sites.
