Job Overview
We are looking for a dynamic registered nurse to work in our Eye Services at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup and Orpington Hospital. The service offers a comprehensive service that gives the post holder an opportunity to learn a new and interesting specialty or progress their current ophthalmic role, skills, and knowledge.
We are looking for someone who embraces change while working with the care group to implement new ways of working, always keeping the patient at the center of all they do.
You will care for patients attending their eye appointment or procedure, coordinate clinical activity, complete various diagnostic eye tests, assist with ocular procedures, and use your holistic knowledge to develop pre-assessment and rapid access assessment skills and much more.
You must demonstrate caring qualities, deliver high-quality care with excellent communication skills, and work well in a multi-professional team so patients are supported and move through the department in a timely and safe manner.

1. To be a safe and effective practitioner able to provide high-quality nursing care to patients and support relatives.
2. To work with support, within a multi-disciplinary team to provide continuing care to a specified group of patients.
3. To supervise and teach junior members of staff and learners as appropriate.
4. Involve and support patients, relatives, significant others, and carers in the care process.
5. To obtain ophthalmology care group knowledge and skills and maintain own personal development.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
1. To practice within the NMC the Code: Professional Standards (2015) and adhere to this at all times.
2. To assess, plan and evaluate individualized programs of care for patients in partnership with the patient, their carers, and the multidisciplinary team.
3. To support and assist in the health education of patients and their families.
4. To ensure care is delivered in accordance with the latest evidence-based practice guidelines.
5. To ensure that patients and next of kin are informed as appropriate.
6. To maintain up-to-date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements.
7. To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
8. To support junior colleagues, students, and visitors to the department.
9. To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model for nurses and other staff.
10. To act in a professional manner at all times.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration at the time of starting appointment.
* Understanding of NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* Able to manage a deteriorating patient.
* Communication skills – able to relate and communicate with patients and staff at all levels and from different professions. Adapts communication style as necessary and is able to work with and through others.
* Proficiency in dispensing and administering oral & IV medication.
* Proven record in teaching/mentoring/supervising others.
