The post holder must work as part of a team, can organise and prioritise their own workload on a day-to-day basis, and observe strict rules about confidentiality at all times. They must also know the limits of their own capabilities and seek direction from a Practice nurse, GP, or Practice Manager. Working under the supervision of the practice nursing team and strictly in accordance with specific practice or national guidelines and protocols, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for performing venepuncture to obtain blood samples from patients only as the result of a direct referral from a GP or nurse practitioner.
Main duties of the job
1. To collect blood samples from patients through venepuncture as requested by clinicians and other appropriately authorised doctors and health professionals.
2. To collect blood samples safely with due respect to the dignity of patients and the needs of other clinical services.
3. To ensure blood samples are collected in appropriate containers, labelled correctly, and prepared and dispatched to relevant laboratory sections in a timely and correct manner.
4. To contribute to the provision of an efficient, high-quality service and ensure that proficiency, competence, and personal and professional standards of that group are maintained.
5. To conduct ECGs when requested by a clinical member of staff.
