Salary: £51,700-£62,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge, and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Job Purpose
The Deputy Managing Editor is a key position in the BBC Wales newsroom. Reporting directly to the Managing Editor, you’ll play a leading role in the news management team and contribute to shaping and delivering the wider strategic aims of the department.
You’ll focus on training and development, workforce planning, and leading the BBC’s apprentice programme within news, as well as taking responsibility for key newsroom projects.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
1. Oversee all training plans to ensure the newsroom is equipped to meet the challenge of changing audience consumption habits.
2. Play a leading role in recruitment, staff movement, and workforce planning, incorporating diversity and inclusion considerations.
3. Provide advice, guidance, and support to management colleagues to align with overall objectives.
4. Act as a champion for our Apprentices, ensuring the programme runs effectively and inspiring them throughout the scheme.
5. Manage the department’s work experience programme and relationships with external organisations.
6. Lead critical projects on behalf of the newsroom, such as planning for the elections.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
You’ll be a team player with a positive attitude and a solutions-focused mindset. You should be highly organized with both editorial and project management experience, ideally from a journalism background.
You’ll need to lead and motivate teams effectively and communicate with a range of stakeholders, adapting your communication style as necessary. A good understanding of recruitment and diversity policies is essential.
