The Deputy Chief Nurse is a key member of the senior leadership team. As a highly experienced and credible senior nurse, you will deputise for the Chief Nurse across the full range of executive duties.
The Deputy Chief Nurses alongside the Chief AHP will support the Chief Nurse in providing leadership to Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health professionals (AHPs) to ensure high professional and patient-care standards throughout NUH.
You will play a key role in supporting colleagues to deliver high standards of care for patients and families and a positive working environment for nurses, midwives, AHP's and care staff. The work of the Deputy Chief Nurse will also enable the delivery of the Trust-wide vision and strategy. They will ensure that where nursing care and practice standards fall short, there are appropriate plans in place to support improvement.
You will lead the development and implementation of a range of national, system-wide and corporate projects as agreed with the Chief Nurse and any related duties in leading nursing at a corporate level within the Trust.
You will also be expected to work in a triumvirate team with the Deputy Medical Director and Deputy Chief Operating Officer to support the delivery of safe and effective care.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Chief Nurse will line manage a range of colleagues, within the nursing and midwifery directorate.
The post holder will develop and maintain strong working relationships with other health care providers, commissioners, regulators and other organisations relevant to the work of the Trust within the patient safety and risk management agenda.
The DCN is accountable for ensuring comprehensive mechanisms are in place to manage and measure quality, its assurance and improvement, enabling the Trust to excel in achieving high quality patient focused care.
The post holder will deputise for the Chief Nurse as directed and appropriate.
The post holder will be expected to participate in the Executive (Gold) On-Call rota, providing advice and support to Silver and leading the Trust in adverse situations.
The Deputy Chief Nurse will hold a portfolio of responsibility which includes both professional leadership and direct line management responsibility.

Job responsibilities
The Deputy Chief Nurse provides visible and accessible professional leadership to Nurses, Midwives and AHPs across the Trust to support the delivery of caring, safe and confident nursing, midwifery and AHP care. Specifically, the Deputy Chief Nurse will:
1. Provide support to the Chief Nurse and regularly deputise across the full range of their portfolio in leading nursing at a corporate level within the Trust, the Integrated Care System and beyond.
2. Work closely with the Chief Nurse and all stakeholders to lead the development and delivery of the Trust Nursing, Midwifery and AHP Strategy.
3. Ensure that the Trust actively contributes to shaping the future of nursing, midwifery and allied health professions through participation in relevant national forums and organisations.
4. Lead development and delivery of the Nursing, Midwifery and AHP workforce plans; collaborating with local stakeholders to ensure an adequate pipeline of registered nurses to meet service requirements.
5. Strategically lead the development and delivery of Nursing, Midwifery and AHP education, research and innovation.
6. Continue to provide leadership for the rollout and embedding of ward accreditation across the Trust, including oversight of the Nursing and Midwifery dashboard.
7. Provide strategic leadership around the quality and safety agenda across the Trust supporting the work of the care groups.
8. Lead the development and implementation on a range of corporate projects as identified by the Chief Nurse.
9. Attend professional forums and committees within the Trust, ICS, Region and beyond on behalf of the Chief Nurse.
10. Establish effective professional forums and governance arrangements to ensure that Nurses, Midwives and AHPs within the Trust are able to actively participate in and influence the development and direction of Nursing, Midwifery and AHP practice within the Trust.
Person Specification
Experience
* Experience of senior nursing leadership roles within the NHS.
* Extensive senior management/clinical leadership experience with proven track record of managing multi-disciplinary teams in a highly complex environment.
* Evidence of strong clinical leadership resulting in high clinical standards and outcomes.
* Extensive experience of working across organisational boundaries and developing productive partnership arrangements.
* Extensive experience of policy development and implementation across a wide range of services.
* Evidence of personal achievements transforming healthcare services and improving patient experience.
* Have a clear awareness of the workforce development and optimisation.
* Demonstrable experience of ensuring the provision of clinically safe services.
* Experience of supporting executive director roles.
* Coaching skills to coach staff.
* Experience of working with new technologies in health care.
