We are seeking an enthusiastic self-motivated radiotherapy physicist with a strong interest and knowledge of computing or a Computing Clinical Scientist. The successful candidate will co-manage and support the Scientific Computing Section of the radiotherapy physics unit.
The successful applicant requires Healthcare Professions Council registration as a clinical scientist and significant experience in computing. Candidates with less experience who can demonstrate an aptitude and keenness for computing will be considered, commencing at Band 7.
The successful applicant will be responsible in collaboration with other members of the SciCom team and a multidisciplinary team of Clinicians, Radiographers, Medical Physicists, and clinical engineers for the design, monitoring, development and support of clinical radiotherapy computing infrastructure to enable the provision of state-of-the-art radiotherapy.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to keep up radiotherapy clinical skills in areas such as dosimetry, Gamma Knife or Brachytherapy.
Main duties of the job
The Radiotherapy Physics Unit (RPU) provides a clinical scientific service to Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) to allow the provision of a radiotherapy service for patients. RPU is also involved in several research activities and is a beta test and reference site for a range of products. The Scientific Computing team (SciCom), managed within RPU, provides a clinical and developmental IT service to Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) and is managed within RPU.
The post holder is responsible in collaboration with other members of the SciCom team and a multidisciplinary team of Clinicians, Radiographers, Medical Physicists, and clinical engineers for the design, monitoring, development and support of clinical radiotherapy computing infrastructure to enable the provision of state-of-the-art radiotherapy.
The post holder will work closely with the other 8A Clinical Scientist in Scientific Computing to cover the computing responsibilities.
The post holder is also responsible for providing clinical and scientific advice in radiotherapy physics.
The post holder will work in a clinical specialism to maintain Clinical Scientist registration and Medical Physics Expert status.

Radiotherapy in Bristol is provided by a professional and friendly multi-disciplinary team who are responsible for delivering a diverse and interesting range of treatment techniques. Bristol Cancer Institute is a specialist cancer centre delivering first class radiotherapy services to the population of the Southwest. The centre has 5 Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators with CBCT, 2 Philips Big Bore CT scanners, Gamma Knife, Varian HDR Brachytherapy and an expanding Molecular Radiotherapy service. We have recently commissioned SGRT (surface guided radiotherapy) system.

Person specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Specialist training and practical experience with a wide range of radiotherapy equipment including linear accelerators, sealed source treatment units, and radiation dose-measuring equipment.
* In depth knowledge of radiotherapy computing systems.
* Experience with basic IP networking, computer security, and firewalls.
* Awareness and understanding of the software development cycle.
* Experience with Windows Server configuration and administration.
* In depth knowledge of the Data Protection Act and the Caldicott Principles.
* Experience with Linux operation systems.
Skills and Abilities
* Competence in at least one shell scripting language (e.g. Bash, PowerShell).
* Competence in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Java, C or similar).
* Ability to interpret, analyse, and manipulate medical imaging data according to the DICOM standard.
* Ability to write and maintain accurate and concise system and process documentation.
* Ability to perform risk assessments and take the correct precautions when managing safety critical systems.
* Ability to work comfortably in high-pressure environments.
* Able to understand and present complex information to multidisciplinary audiences at an appropriate level.
Qualifications and Training
* The post holder must have a BSc or equivalent in physics/computer science or engineering.
* The post holder must have a postgraduate qualification in a relevant branch of physics/computing or medical physics to the level of MSc or higher, or equivalent.
* The post holder should have State Registration as a clinical scientist with HCPC.
