Our client is based in an Industrial Unit in Derby (on the outskirts of the city centre) where they complete all projects offering a turnkey service to manufacturers and OEMs who are looking for bespoke equipment and machinery. As a small team they have delivered thousands of projects over the business's lifetime and they are proud that 95% of the designs are manufactured and in use still today making them a world-class mechanical design engineering business. Their future plans are centred around growing the business, but retaining 'The Bennett Way' which is keeping things simple, providing practical solutions and giving customers the best service.
Role overview
You will be expected to create designs from concept through to detailed designs and manufacturing packs, ideally you will be able to complete FEA analysis as well. As an experienced mechanical design engineer, you will be expected to create sketches, block models and complex 3D models for the range of projects we work on. You'll also be communicating your designs to customers and quality checking everything you produce to make sure you hit the 'right first time' principle we work towards. Keeping things simple is also another principle here and you will be expected to never over engineer things and always look to optimise your designs to provide the best solution to clients. Some projects involve reverse engineering or value engineering so being able to spot improvements is critical to undertaking these tasks.
Your Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Communication of your concepts and ideas both verbally and visually
2. Generation of detailed models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks accurately, in agreed timescales
3. Conducting site surveys and liaising with clients
4. Creation of innovative and practical designs
5. Supporting the profitability and long-term goals of the business
6. Using your knowledge of CAD systems and best practices for 3D models
7. Collaboration with the team and clients to exceed expectations
8. Achieve targets that are set by management and agreed for your role
9. Working in line with the company values and working towards achieving the company vision
10. Supporting the team by performing other duties that may be requested and agreed or advised by your Line Manager from time to time.

Essential requirements for the role:
1. Educated to at least HNC level in Engineering (degree preferred but not essential)
2. A minimum of 15 years of experience in mechanical design engineering
3. Experience using SolidWorks to produce:
1. Detailed 3D Models
2. Manufacturing Drawings
3. Bill of Materials
4. Cut Lists
4. Current full driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use
5. Able to work at our Derby base
Desirable requirements for the role:
1. Practical and theoretical knowledge of designing fabrications and machined parts for special purpose machines
2. Experience of specifying standard machines parts including bearings, pneumatics, motors, gearboxes and fasteners
3. Experience of static FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and Hand Calculations
4. Experience of conducting site visits to perform surveys
5. Practical hands-on experience, (taking things apart, fixings things, making things)
6. Certified engineer (IEng or CEng)
Salary and Office Hours:
1. Monday to Thursday 8am to 4pm or 9am to 5pm, Friday 8am to 1pm or 9am to 1pm
2. £45k to £50k
