Job responsibilities Education & Training 4 Lead on the planning, developing, organisation and delivery of maternity mandatory training within maternity which includes midwives, nurses, medical staff, maternity care assistants, maternity support workers, theatre staff and nursery nurses, liaising with specialist midwives, the multi-disciplinary team, risk team and Head of Midwifery where necessary. 4 Design and deliver training sessions and comprehensive presentations to staff and students across the Trust, promoting evidenced based practice and assisting in the development of new and improved practices. 4 Evaluate the content, methods of delivery and impact of the education and training programmes in order to ensure delivered content meets our maternity service needs, individual staff requirements and National reports and agenda such as the Core Competency Framework as outlined by NHS England and informs subsequent education sessions. 4 Support Specialist Midwives and trainers to incorporate a range of diverse teaching techniques and learning approaches into their training sessions, in order to maximise quality and effectiveness of the knowledge they are departing. 4 Keep accurate records of training and provide data for training compliance to demonstrate compliance with the Maternity Incentive Scheme. 4 Monitor compliance of attendance and completion of mandatory training and feed this information into the quarterly quality assurance report. 4 Identify staff who are non-complaint with training and work with the Lead Midwife/HoM in the management of staff who are non-compliant with training. 4 Identify training, competency and skills requirements of the clinical work force, through the Trusts Strategic Training Needs Analysis. 4 Oversee and facilitate Midwifes access and training for relevant clinical systems such as the blood gas machine, blood glucose machine, blood hound tracking machine. 4 Support competency training in practice to ensure the competence of midwifery staff in relation to approved competencies for both equipment and midwifery skills i.e. perineal suturing, cannulation, epidural top-ups, IV pumps, CTG monitoring and essential oils. 4 Explore, develop and support opportunities for inter professional learning. 4 Promote a culture where lifelong learning, education and development are seen as integral to clinical and professional practice. 4 Have an overview of individual midwives training needs analysis including their wishes to pursue postgraduate qualifications and where appropriate support these wishes by helping individuals secure funding and opportunities for further studies and career development. 4 Advise individuals on post graduate modules and opportunities for individuals wishing to undertake further education and progress their career. 4 Support managers and teams to resolve complex issues or problems in relation to CPD. 4 Support the Professional Midwifery Advocates and Lead Midwives as required. 4 Support investigations where practice issues are identified and work support midwives involved in incidents and address any learning or system concerns. 4 Support midwives undergoing development or subject to management action/capability plans. 4 Support with the welcoming and orientation of new staff to our trust and maternity services. 4 Plan, implement and evaluate orientation and preceptorship programmes. 4 Support and educate preceptor midwives to enable them to support preceptee midwives. 4 Work in partnership with the Trust education team and simulation faculty to provide multi-professional simulation training, with a specific focus on human factors. 4 Identify Midwives who require training to become Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors and support them to achieve this. 4 Support the roles of Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors. 4 Support the practical elements of the Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) course for students and midwifery staff to become signed off examiners. 4 Identify where it may be beneficial to run ad hoc study workshops, study days and conferences and organise and facilitate on these. 4 Act as a role model in promoting and educating staff with regards to providing respectful, equitable care and the cultural safety of women, their families and colleagues. 4 Undertake all personal mandatory training. Leadership and management 4 As a key member of the management team, work with the HoM, Matrons, Lead Midwives and Multi-disciplinary education leads to ensure the maternity education programme continues to develop the maternity service. 4 Contribute to a positive culture, demonstrating effective professional attitudes and behaviours internally and external to the Trust, to enable continuous quality and service improvement, and maintain good working relationships. 4 Review and influence the development and implementation of policies based on local and National agenda. 4 Promote staff awareness of national agenda, influencing midwifery services, local learning and ensure the service reflects current policy. 4 Initiate/participate with projects and working groups within the maternity department as required. 4 Support the division in operational and strategic management. 4 Attend and contribute at Trust and departmental education planning meetings. 4 Support other areas of the Trust seeking information on maternity education such as preceptorship programme. 4 Advise, develop and ensure quality of learning opportunities within a multi-professional framework in order that the service users receive a high standard of care. 4 Support the multidisciplinary team in the development of staff in the clinical area, and act as a clinical / educational resource to all members of the multidisciplinary team. 4 To develop facilitation skills to be able to facilitate training sessions as effectively as possible. 4 Complete appraisal interviews and paperwork for junior members of the practice development team and continue to monitor their development and progress. 4 Assist with organisational aspects of getting newly appointed staff into post in a timely manner. 4 To support the implementation of any changes as a result of Governmental and Regulatory Body recommendations. 4 Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters. 4 In conjunction with their manager, identify training needs of self, participating in clinical audit and quality projects which contribute to the departmental education programme. 4 Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required. 4 Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with lead staff. 4 Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed. Research 4 Implement research in practice and the education, training and policy development that would be needed to support this. Innovation 4 Listen to service improvement ideas from staff and work alongside them to support their ideas to make practice changes in a thorough and methodical way that is fully evaluated. 4 Encourage staff to do meaningful quality improvement projects via the Trusts quality improvement academy and provide departmental support for these projects and support them to fruition. Policy Development 4 Support and attend the multi professional Gloucestershire Obstetric Guidelines Group (GOGG). 4 Initiate and support policy development in line with best research evidence and National recommendations. 4 Lead the development of documentation to support clinical practice. 4 Understand and contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/ protocols/ guidelines. 4 Liaise with pharmacy and contribute to the updating of Patient Group Directives (PGDs).
