South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Gastroenterology at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
There is one full-time post available, primarily at Sunderland Royal Hospital. There may be a requirement for the post holder to fulfil some duties at another site from their base.
We are looking for an outstanding individual to join our dynamic team of fourteen consultants and multi-subspecialist nurses in providing and facilitating a comprehensive high-quality gastroenterology service for our patients. The successful applicant will work 10 PAs within the specialty with the opportunity to work part-time and flexible working with increased PAs. All subspecialty interests are encouraged, and service development to mutually benefit the trust and patients would be supported. The trust is an immersion endoscopy training site for the North East region. There are exciting opportunities to be involved in various roles in the North East Endoscopy Training Academy (NETA).
The Gastroenterology department sits within the Directorate of General Internal Medicine across two sites. The team oversees their inpatients in two dedicated wards, one on each site.
A full range of outpatient services are provided. The department is well supported by an excellent team of resident doctors, nursing staff, and administrative support.
Main Duties of the Job
As a medical consultant at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS FT trust, you will have continual responsibility for the care of your inpatients and outpatients. You will oversee inpatients during pro-rota periods of consultant-of-the-week and be expected to cover colleagues for holidays, study leave, and short-term sickness. You will be expected to supervise resident doctors on the wards and out-patients and, if willing, be nominated for educational and clinical supervisor or appraiser roles. You will also be expected to undertake, as part of the team, an active role in regular departmental clinical governance meetings.
You will share responsibility for the provision and development of the gastroenterology service with the consultant team, and successful recruitment will help to develop seven-day services at the South Tyneside site.
The post holder is expected to possess Membership/Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and to be on the GMC Specialist Register for both General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with a valid license to practise at the time of taking up the post.
It is anticipated that the entire team will contribute to coordinated working across both sites and improve efficiency and patient pathways.
Significant research opportunities are available, and members of the team lead and/or are involved in national studies in endoscopy and gastroenterology. The team includes the president-elect of the BSG and has members on several national committees.
