Locum Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with an interest in TB & COPD.
The post is a fixed-term contract for a period of 6 months.
We are seeking a dynamic Locum Respiratory Consultant to join the Leeds TB & COPD Specialist services at St James University Hospital. The appointee will become a key member of a dedicated and highly experienced multi-disciplinary team.
The job is a full-time fixed-term locum post comprising ten programmed activities, with supervision of the junior doctors and specialist nurses. There will be an on-call commitment to cover the Respiratory Medicine rota on a 1:12 basis and 1:109 Acute Medicine on-call.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust makes up one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe housing over 2,000 beds and providing a range of general, acute, and elective services, together with a significant number of regional and supra-regional specialties. The department of Respiratory Medicine has undergone significant modernization over recent years and remains a centre for clinical and educational excellence. Inpatient services are provided in Gledhow Wing at St James Hospital. This includes three Respiratory wards, an NIV/Weaning unit, a dedicated CF ward, a procedures room, Sleep services, and a Nurse-led day unit. There are cross-city outpatient facilities including a dedicated chest clinic at Leeds General Infirmary. The unit has a strong commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful applicant should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in Respiratory Medicine & General Medicine and its related specialties including TB & COPD. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

This post is a full-time (10 PA) Locum post, fixed-term for a period of 6 months. The appointee will work at St James University Teaching Hospital, where there will be inpatient and outpatient responsibilities.
There is a commitment to Respiratory Medicine 1:12 on call and Acute Medicine 1:109 on call. The applicant should be committed to teaching and research.
15 whole time equivalent consultant respiratory physicians provide a cross-city inpatient and outpatient service. Current sub-specialty interests among the physicians include lung cancer, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease, difficult asthma, tuberculosis, sleep disordered breathing & non-invasive ventilation, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, PCD, COPD and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.
The Leeds TB Service
We offer an integrated service including diagnosis and treatment of active Tuberculosis and Latent Tuberculosis Infection, and screening for people who have been in contact with tuberculosis. In addition, we manage patients with pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease.
Respiratory medicine and infectious diseases consultants work together in the clinic. We aim to provide holistic care for patients and their families, with support in the clinic from the specialist TB Health Visitor team, and adult and paediatric services running together so parents, children, and other family members needing contact screening can usually be seen in the same visit. TB drugs are supplied directly within the clinic by a specialist pharmacist.
There is a weekly MDT before the clinic to discuss new and complex cases, involving respiratory and infectious disease physicians, paediatrician, microbiologist, pharmacist, and TB nurse specialists.
We provide a regional service for Multidrug resistant TB and act as a tertiary referral centre for complex mycobacterial disease.
The Leeds COPD Integrated Service
The Leeds Integrated COPD Service is a Consultant led Service in collaboration between Respiratory Medicine at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the Community Respiratory Team at Leeds Community Health Trust. Our aim is to provide accessible, excellent, COPD specialist care across Leeds including quality assured diagnosis & proactive disease management.
The service delivers a wide range of activities including delivering COPD care bundle, maintaining best practice standards in acute management of COPD through participation in the National COPD Audit, COPD, Palliative and emphysema MDTs, Home Oxygen Service, Virtual Respiratory Ward in the Community, Alpha 1 - antitrypsin deficiency, Home NIV, Pulmonary Rehabilitation & Specialist COPD outpatient Clinics.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MB BS or equivalent qualification. MRCP or equivalent qualification Certificate of completion of Specialist training in Respiratory and General Medicine or CESR or equivalent.
* The appointee must hold the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training in Respiratory Medicine.
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
Experience
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Respiratory Medicine with special interest in COPD & TB.
* Must be able to demonstrate higher training in Respiratory Medicine and General Medicine.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Eligibility, Fitness to Practice, and Language Skills
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics.
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
