Team Leader Physiotherapist – Major Trauma

Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic and enthusiastic physiotherapist with excellent multidisciplinary communication to lead and develop the Major Trauma physiotherapy team. This post is integral to the delivery of a high standard of physiotherapeutic care and is essential to the multidisciplinary team’s ability to provide smooth and appropriate discharge planning with the wider community MDT. The successful candidate will work as a senior clinician in major trauma areas.
The successful candidate must have extensive demonstrable experience at a senior level in the field of major trauma physiotherapy working in the acute environment; be able to demonstrate an appropriate level of personal autonomy, clinical skill, leadership, and proven knowledge of the national healthcare agenda that impacts day-to-day life in the major trauma department. You must have good inter-personal skills, work well in a multidisciplinary team environment and have the ability to lead a team in challenging times.
Main duties of the job
1. To provide a high level of clinical leadership to the Major Trauma service.
2. Undertake a team leader role with support from the Head of Physiotherapy, Consultant Therapist - Neurosurgery, and Therapies Service Line Cluster Manager in planning, co-ordinating, delivering, developing, and evaluating the Physiotherapy Service provided to major trauma patients on a day-to-day basis.
3. To provide clinical leadership to more junior staff in the department and ensure governance agenda is delivered in line with trust structure.
4. To supervise/performance manage all staff line managed by this post.
5. To take a major role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within the specialty who may have acute complex and/or acute on chronic presentation and to determine clinical diagnosis and physiotherapy treatment indicated, and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.
6. To assist with data collection and audit reports for major trauma patients.
7. Working within the Major Trauma Centre, the post holder will work alongside the Consultant Therapist in attending and representing Therapies to the Peninsula major trauma network and the current major trauma multi-professional service leads.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
1. To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support more junior staff to do likewise.
2. Participate in providing a seven-day service (Inclusive of bank holidays) for the trauma areas as service provision requires.
3. Maintenance of respiratory competencies is essential due to the acute, complex, and unstable nature of the patients.
4. Undertake the assessment and treatment of acutely ill patients with neurological/respiratory/health problems, who may have a complex presentation and maintain associated records as an autonomous practitioner on a daily basis, including when working on the emergency duty rota.
5. Provide advice to medical and nursing staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding patients' respiratory and chest functions/condition when working on the emergency duty on-call rota for paediatric and adult patients.
6. To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate clinical diagnosis and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive management plans.
7. To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills, and to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care and to support junior staff in this work.
8. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
9. To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination, and palpatory senses for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
Person specification
Knowledge and Experience
1. Extensive post-graduate demonstrable experience across all specialities. Previous demonstrable experience at a Senior level within the field of inpatient trauma, dealing with broad/complex caseload.
2. Demonstrable experience at a senior level within major trauma in-patient services within an acute setting.
3. Demonstrable experience of working at a senior level within adult surgical/medical/neuro/respiratory setting.
4. Recent senior demonstrable experience in the management of post-operative/critical care patients with a broad range of complex cardiorespiratory needs.
5. Proven evidence of Leadership and team working abilities.
6. Proven evidence of Teaching and CPD.
7. An awareness of current NHS and Health issues related to Major Trauma Care.
8. Previous working at Band 7 level within the acute major trauma services.
9. Demonstrable experience of complex MDT working and discharge planning.
10. Demonstrable experience within acute NHS environment.
Qualifications
1. Degree (BSc Hons Physiotherapy) or equivalent.
2. HCPC registration.
3. Attendance at additional relevant professional courses.
4. M.Sc. relevant to the area.
5. Leadership and Management training.
6. Proven evidence of involvement with Audit/research.
