Our network has a huge number of structures; buildings, viaducts, bridges (over, under and foot), subways, retaining walls and culverts. A key role in keeping passengers and freight users safe, it will be your job to carry out examinations, record defects and report on your findings. Inspections will be varied in nature from visual examinations to determine the structures current condition, detailed (within touching distance) examinations to identify signs of deterioration and also special examinations using monitoring equipment. Working hours will be on a predetermined shift pattern spanning days, evenings and 26 weekend shifts per year.
Youll join a cohort of trainees in the Works Delivery Civils team where you will be supported by a dedicated trainer and experienced team of Examiners. Well give you all the training and tools required to develop you into a competent STE4 qualified Examiner.
Location: Roles are location and homebased (located within territory). You will be asked to select your territory location preferences at application stage. There are 7 territories within the NW&C Region. Your work site will generally be within a 60-minute commute to the site location.
Training will mostly take place within your territory, but occasional stays at one of our training centres may be required. Travel and accommodation will be provided.

About the role (External)
What youll do
1. Carry out site examination of structures to determine the structural condition as allocated within the Alarm system and within defined timescales
2. Compile and submit condition reports using the Alarm electronic system or other agreed process and submit for reviewing by the Examining Engineers team
3. Perform special examinations as directed including assistance with monitoring schemes for sensitive structures
4. Undertake reconnaissance visits
5. Provide assistance with specialist examinations undertaken by the Examining Engineers team, including unique structures and tunnel examinations
6. Undertake all on-call duties in support of rapid response, including bridge strike
7. Assist in provision of safety critical site support duties as required
8. Co-operate with quality, safety and environmental objectives and contribute, where appropriate, to continual improvement initiatives
9. Makes observations and technically based decisions within sphere of competence for the role
10. Offers recommendations for consideration by Examining Engineers team
11. Makes decisions and takes action on site in respect of immediate safety issues, imminent structural failure and operational capabilities of structures following bridge strikes, at times under pressure
12. Has direct impact on performance through delivery of completed examination reports
· GCSE pass in English & Maths
· C&G/ NVC Level 3 in any building construction trade (additional relevant experience may be considered in lieu on an individual basis)
· IT Literate with minimum word processing and drawing application
· Full driving licence
· Good communication and interpersonal skills
· Work alone with minimum supervision

How to apply (External)
Salary: We follow a structured pay framework; a starting salary will be offered at £28,392 for trainees with no previous relevant experience, or £30,576 - £34,944 depending on existing skills and experience.
Stage 1 salary is £36,582 once assessed and deemed competent in PTS, Mandatory Training, and successful completion of Masonry, Concrete & Timber training course.
Stage 2 salary is £38,766 once assessed and deemed competent as per stage 1, with all of the following: STE04 standard Masonry, Concrete & Timber, successful completion of Metallic Training Course, assessed deemed competent STE04 and COSS or IWA.
Stage 3 salary is £39,312 once assessed and deemed competent as per stages 1 & 2, plus Bridge Strike Examination competency and on-call working arrangements.
