The Smart Data Donation Service We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Frontend Developer to join the exciting Smart Data Donation Service (SDDS) project. The SDDS is a major infrastructure project funded by Smart Data Research UK, which aims to catalyse a paradigm shift in the quality and accessibility of smart data for research into digital and online experiences (e.g. games, social media). The SDDS will achieve this by creating a service that facilitates the large-scale donation of data by the individuals that it features. This will be made possible due to the UK’s GDPR regulations, which allow people to access personal data that companies hold about them so that they can donate it securely for research purposes. For more information, please see our SDDS brochure. Role As a Senior Frontend Developer, you will take a leading role in building exceptional user experiences for SDDS data donors. Your work will focus on developing intuitive, accessible and visually engaging interfaces, ensuring smooth and secure interaction with our platform while collaborating closely with designers and backend developers to bring innovative solutions to life. A typical day in this role might include: Developing intuitive, accessible and visually appealing user interfaces using modern frameworks Collaborating with UX designers to translate wireframes and prototypes into interactive and responsive web experiences Writing clean, reusable and maintainable code, with a strong focus on performance and user experience Ensuring frontend components are fully integrated with APIs and other backend systems Implementing comprehensive testing strategies, including unit, integration and end-to-end tests, to ensure robust frontend functionality Optimising applications for speed, scalability and accessibility to meet diverse user needs Troubleshooting and resolving complex frontend issues in collaboration with the team Staying up to date with emerging web technologies and advocating for best practices in frontend development Documenting design decisions, coding practices and deployment processes You will have the opportunity to learn, innovate and collaborate within a diverse team of researchers and IT professionals. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed Proven experience in responsive frontend development across mobile, web and desktop platforms. Using frameworks such as, but not limited to React, Flutter or Angular Experience integrating RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL endpoints into frontend applications for seamless data interactions Experience working with cross-functional teams, including UX designers, user researchers, backend developers and data scientists, to build coherent and aligned frontend experiences Experience in the following areas is desirable: Demonstrable ability to design and implement data visualisations, using libraries such as D3.js and Chart.js, or similar, with a focus on usability and accessibility Knowledge of performance optimisation techniques for frontend applications, including lazy loading, code splitting and efficient state management Hands on experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks, for continuous integration and rapid deployment Experience in cloud-based deployment of applications (e.g, AWS Amplify) Knowledge of accessibility standards and responsive design principles, ensuring applications meet WCAG and accessibility guidelines If you are passionate about technology and are inspired by the vision of the Smart Data Donation Service, we want to hear from you This role offers a fantastic opportunity to enhance your skills while contributing to the groundbreaking research that the SDDS aims to deliver, making a positive impact on the world.
