NHS Dumfries and Galloway
Clinical Teaching Fellow
Midpark Hospital, Dumfries
For 12 months from August 2025
The Department of Psychiatry in Midpark Hospital, Dumfries seeks to appoint an enthusiastic individual to assist in delivery of undergraduate Psychiatry teaching within the Department.
The ideal candidate will have completed CT3 or equivalent, but this post would suit any Doctor who has completed foundation training, with at least 6 months UK NHS experience, wishing to improve teaching skills. This can either be at FY3 or SAS level. The post is popular with both post FY2 or post CT doctors who would like to further develop skills in teaching and curriculum delivery.
This is a 10 session post. It is anticipated that around 7 sessions per week will be devoted to teaching and tutorials, 2 sessions per week for clinical activities (which can be discussed based on interest and Departmental need), and 1 session for administration and supporting professional activities.
The clinical component of the role is not as yet fixed, and it is our intention to match the successful candidate to a work area where the service would benefit from additional medical support. It is important to highlight that there is the potential to annualise the clinical sessions, for times when there are no students on placement within the department.
The 7 sessions for teaching include meeting students on arrival and running our Departmental induction, bedside teaching for students, tutorials, and preparation for teaching sessions.
The successful candidate will also be supported to organise our Departmental Postgraduate Teaching Programme, as well as our Undergraduate Teaching Programme.
It is hoped the successful candidate will also work to expand our use of Simulation training, and forging new links with Education Centre at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, potentially using the Simulation Suite.
Midpark Hospital offers placements to 3 different Universities:
• Dundee Year 4 students
• Edinburgh Year 5 students
• SCOTGEM Years 2, 3 and 4 students
Dundee students attend for 4 week placements, starting at the end of July and ending at the start of June. Edinburgh students attend for 5 week placements, beginning in August and ending in May.
SCOTGEM
Year 2 students attend from August to September – with weekly sessions interviewing current inpatients in Midpark Hospital.
Year 3 students attend from November onwards, placed on a ward for a week and shadowing the clinical team.
Year 4 students can opt into SSCs run by the Department, currently 2 weeks in Old Age and 2 weeks with the Specialist Drug and Alcohol Service.
The successful candidate will in addition have the option of 2 clinical sessions within the directorate, whether inpatient or outpatient, to be discussed in more detail at interview. There is no fixed on call commitment with this post though we anticipate there will be opportunities for on call as part of our internal locum bank, if desired.
