Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Communication skills
* Facilitate communication, which results in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi-professional team.
* Exchange verbal and written information with patients, staff, and carers requiring tact and diplomacy.
* Ensure appropriate systems are in place for the safe and timely discharge of patients.
* Attend and be an active member of Directorate/Divisional meetings and working groups.
* Address patient concerns on the ward/department and work with the Patient Advisory and Liaison Service (PALS).
* Participate in the resolution of complaints/adverse incidents and implement action plans to prevent re-occurrence.
* Participate in the appraisal process each year and hold regular minuted ward/department meetings.
Knowledge, Training & Experience
* Current NMC registration.
* Degree level qualification in Health/Nursing Related Studies.
* Experience of teaching and assessing.
* Formal leadership and management training.
* Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience, including 1 year of taking charge of a ward/department on a shift basis.
* Ability to lead change and new ways of working.
* Ability to do a minimum of 2 clinical shifts/week.
* Ability to participate in Senior Staffing rota for the Division (may include weekends).
Managerial
* Be aware of resources to promote efficient management of the ward or department and manage resources within budgets.
* Participate in the timely admission and discharge of patients.
* Ensure the safekeeping of patient's property and valuables.
* Follow agreed policy for accepting gifts, donations, and proceeds of fundraising activities.
* Understand the UHNM policy regarding any complaint received from a patient or their relatives.
* Participate in the maintenance of equipment within the ward or department.
* Maintain accurate and concise records, including patient data and Adverse Incident forms.
* Manage the scheduling team.
Clinical and Quality
* Assess the care needs of patients, ensuring continuity of care.
* Provide holistic care and therapies through different routes of administration.
* Ensure care activities are research-based or best practice.
* Participate in clinical supervision and reflective practice.
* Contribute to the effective implementation of clinical risk management within the ward area.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse on NMC register.
* Training/education qualification or equivalent experience.
* SACT passport.
* Formal leadership/management training or equivalent experience.
Skills and experience
* SACT clinical experience with in-depth knowledge of the drugs and its effects.
* Ability to work autonomously and within the MDT.
* Ability to motivate and support others to achieve goals.
* Experience of facilitating staff engagement interventions.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with situations sensitively.
