JOB TITLE: SESSIONAL COUNSELLOR
Department: Signposted Cymru
Reporting to: Ops Manager
Location: Signposted Cymru Aberdare
Hours: 1 set day per week
Pay Rate: Up to £20 per hour for face-to-face appointments based in the office. Telephone counselling Up to £15 Per hour.
Additional: BACP membership or equivalent & own insurance.
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
To provide counselling support to Signposted Cymru beneficiaries and their families affected by Mental Health. To liaise with the Office Manager if there is a need to refer beneficiaries to psychiatric services and external agencies and refer to alternative counselling agencies where appropriate. To promote the work of Signposted Cymru.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Responsibilities:
1. Provide one-to-one counselling and undertake group work, as requested, within the current resources of the service if this is within the counsellor’s expertise/training; using a range of theories e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic, Person-Centred/Humanistic and Brief Therapy.
2. Assess clients with multiple and complex issues regarding suitability for counselling, in line with the Service Protocol.
3. Select appropriate therapeutic treatment and refer clients for specialist treatment or other resources as appropriate.
4. Maintain high-quality clinical practice by attending monthly clinical supervision meetings in accordance with minimum levels recommended by relevant professional bodies – e.g. BACP.
5. Ensure clients are made aware that confidentiality will be broken if there is a case of serious harm to self or others, or child protection issues; ensuring that the client contract is signed at the initial assessment.
6. Undertake appropriate Continuing Professional Development in line with professional body requirements.
7. Be a member of and work to the quality and standards in accordance with a Professional Body and statutory guidelines.
Operational Responsibilities:
1. Assist the Office Manager with reports and maintain beneficiary’s records appropriately and securely.
2. Provide input to the Office Manager during the development of the counselling strategy.
3. Liaise with other staff members to ensure they are informed of counselling operational objectives.
4. Comment and help implement amendments to administrative procedures or policies related to the counselling service.
5. Assist the Office Manager in the development and delivery of beneficiaries services.
6. Manage all aspects of appointments and waiting list system(s) with the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
7. Provide an initial beneficiaries assessment including risk assessment.
8. Deal promptly and sensitively with individuals external to Signposted Cymru while maintaining professional boundaries.
9. Maintain active involvement with current developments in counselling and the wider services offered by Signposted Cymru.
10. Ensure that any complaints relating to the counselling service are reported to the Office Manager.
General:
1. Ensure appropriate insurance and legal requirements are maintained.
2. Ensure that Signposted Cymru values and objectives are reflected in all aspects of the role.
3. Undertake additional duties that may result from changing circumstances.
4. Attend conferences, courses, and workshops to update and develop counselling expertise.
5. Take responsibility for health and safety, equal opportunities, and data protection within the scope of the post.
