The Home Office works to build a safe, fair, and prosperous UK. We achieve this through our work on counter-terrorism, policing, fire, crime, drugs policy, immigration, and passports.
The Public Safety Group’s (PSG) role is to keep the public safe by cutting crime, disrupting the highest harm criminals, protecting the vulnerable and ensuring that our police, fire and rescue services are as efficient and effective as they can be in delivering front line public services. We work with our partners in other government departments, local government, and the voluntary sector to develop and implement policy, provide funding, and deliver legislation.
The new government has put a more proactive approach to crime prevention and strategy at the heart of its Safer Streets Mission.
Central to delivering this is a new Crime Prevention and Insights Unit, which has recently been established in Crime Directorate. The aim of this Unit is to use a far more data-driven and targeted approach to identify key opportunities to prevent crime and then leverage these, using the best evidence we have of what works, to trial and scale the most promising approaches.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing an even more data-led and evidence-based approach to how we tackle crime – which will make a concrete difference to lives and communities across England and Wales.
Key Responsibilities:
* Assessing existing crime prevention structures, funding and delivery across England and Wales mapping this, analysing it and then supporting the development of recommendations for ministers on what can be improved, including potentially through legislation.
* Contributing to building a true system of key stakeholders, focused on working together to improve crime prevention across England and Wales. Moving beyond process and bureaucracy to shared problem solving and resource collaboration across multiple Departments and Agencies. As part of this ensure the smooth running of an officials’ Board on Crime Prevention.
* Contribute to the development of a data approach and tool to map crime concentrations and wider crime prevention-relevant data to enable us to understand key opportunities for interventions.
* Contributing to developing our understanding of the financial benefits of effective crime prevention and how this compares to the costs of the system. Support the development of strong return on investments cases for crime prevention – at both a systems level and when considering individual projects and feed into Spending Reviews.
* Forge and maintain excellent stakeholder relationships with a wide range of frontline practitioners, the third sector and academics to build a better understanding of the latest evidence around crime prevention and most effective practice.
* Contribute to our shared responsibility for fostering an open and collaborative culture, supporting staff in their development, and building an environment in which all members of staff can fulfil their potential.
* For some roles, the post holder may be required to play a key role in establishing and managing a new innovation fund, including designing and commissioning pilots and supporting the development of the strategic framing for the initiative. This will include grants and spend management.
The jobholder will need to work closely with the wider Unit and exact tasking may shift as the unit and policy develops, the jobholder would need to be content with this short-term ambiguity. In addition, the post holder will be expected to work flexibly and may be asked to provide support on wider Group priorities as needed.
