The College is looking to appoint a Director of Music to succeed Anna Lapwood, who is leaving to pursue a career as a freelance musician. Pembroke is seeking to appoint an individual to build on its reputation for musical excellence by maintaining and developing further the musical life of the College. Our student musicians have indicated that the person appointed should be supportive, enthusiastic, ambitious and open-minded.
The Director of Music has overall responsibility for the music in the College Chapel. They will be expected to continue to develop and enhance both the Chapel Choir and the Girls’ Choir, while exercising a concern for the welfare of their members in liaison with the tutorial team. The role holder will also be required to provide active leadership for the wider musical life of the College in collaboration with the College Music Society. They are also expected to take a leading role in developing a vision for a programme of ambitious musical events in the auditorium and to work with a range of stakeholders to ensure its delivery.
Pembroke College, founded in 1347 by Marie de St Pol, Countess of Pembroke, is the third oldest College in Cambridge. Located in the heart of the University city, Pembroke was the first Cambridge college to have its own Chapel; the current historic building dates back to a design by Sir Christopher Wren. Pembroke also boasts within its recently expanded Mill Lane site a new auditorium that seats over 200 people in a space ideally suited to opening up the cultural life of the College to the public. Above all, Pembroke is shaped by its intimate yet diverse community, committed to welcoming individuals of exceptional talent regardless of their social, cultural or educational background. Pembroke thrives on conversations, between generations and disciplines - between 462 undergraduates, 299 postgraduates, 75 Fellows and 199 staff, and among an extensive network of alumni/ae.
